The Hoosiers celebrated as if the game was over. They raced off the field, led by an energetic coach Terry Hoeppner who pushed and shoved his defensive players in congratulations of their efforts. Hoeppner described the locker room atmosphere as "electric." Heading into halftime of Saturday's game, IU led Minnesota 14-7 and had just stopped the Gophers on a goal line stand.

IU community has a right to know

The recent outcry against IU President Adam Herbert's decision to restart the chancellor search and leave College of Arts and Sciences Dean Kumble Subbaswamy out in the cold perfectly illustrates what interactions between administration, faculty and students are lacking at IU-Bloomington: any degree of transparency.

Bush: Latin America must defend democracy

BRASILIA, Brazil -- President Bush didn't name names Sunday when he called on Latin Americans to boldly defend strong democratic institutions and reject any drift back to the days of authoritarian rule. But his remarks were a clear jab at Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. The leftist leader and friend of Cuba's Fidel Castro spent the past two days hurling criticism at the United States at the Summit of the Americas in Argentina.

Iraqi civilians ﬂee town consumed in violence

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Scores of terrified Iraqis fled a besieged town Sunday, waving white flags and hauling their belongings to escape a second day of fighting between U.S. Marines and al-Qaida-led militants along the Syrian border. U.S. and Iraqi troops battled insurgents house-to-house, the U.S. military said.

France: Restoring order 'absolute priority'

PARIS -- French President Jacques Chirac on Sunday promised arrests, trials and punishment for those sowing "violence or fear" across France -- as the urban unrest that has triggered attacks on vehicles, nursery schools and other targets reached central Paris. Youths set ablaze nearly 1,300 vehicles and torched businesses, schools and symbols of French authority, including post offices and provincial police stations, late Saturday and early Sunday.

Common Council says I-69 will make city 'generic'

Gov. Mitch Daniels' plan to make Interstate 69 a public-private partnership toll road is compounding the dilemma the proposed road creates, anti-I-69 activists said Thursday at the annual meeting of Citizens for Appropriate Rural Roads. "The toll road is bad for all the same reasons I-69 is, plus many more," said Bloomington Common Council President Andy Ruff.

Kansas protestors appear in Indiana

Bedford -- College students from around the state met in Bedford to counter a protest by a group united behind a religious warning "God hates fags." Andrea Scamihorn, a Ball State University student, said she only slept one hour Saturday night to drive three hours to the southern Indiana town about a half-hour south of Bloomington, with 23 other students to counter-protest.

New IDS editor in chief selected

The IU Student Media Board selected senior Rick Newkirk Friday as the editor in chief of the Indiana Daily Student for the spring 2006 semester. Newkirk was selected after an hour-long question and answer session in the Indiana Memorial Union by a panel including representatives from the IDS, the Arbutus, the IU Student Association, the IU School of Journalism, the Bloomington Faculty Council and the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.

Trustees approve parking garage location

RICHMOND, Ind. -- Following months of debate with community members, the IU board of trustees unanimously voted to approve the building of a four-and-a-half story parking garage at the corner of Fess and Atwater avenues. The measure, which would create 575 parking spaces on the southwest portion of the campus, was originally scheduled to be voted on during the September trustee meeting, but the vote was delayed after opposition from the community arose.

Yale makes graduate music school free

Annual event celebrates diversity of art forms

The Buskirk-Chumley Theater was home to a packed audience Saturday night as the African American Dance Company, African American Choral Ensemble and IU Soul Revue came together for their annual event, "A Potpourri of Arts." The African American Arts Institute created the collaborative event in 1993 and has performed it each year since then. The AAAI created the showcase to show the wide range of African American performance produced by the Institute.

Tornado rips through southern Indiana and northern Kentucky

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - A tornado ripped across southwestern Indiana and northern Kentucky while most residents were asleep early Sunday, killing at least 20 people. There were no deaths immediately reported in Kentucky, but authorities warned that the death toll in Indiana was likely to grow. About 200 people were injured in the two states.

Herbert pressured to pick chancellor

RICHMOND, Ind. - The board of trustees Friday pressured IU President Adam Herbert to name a permanent chancellor for the Bloomington campus. In a unanimous resolution passed at IU-East, the board supported Herbert's decision to reopen the chancellor search but told him to "expedite the search process with the intent of filling the position as early as possible." Trustees said they hoped the search committee, headed by former School of Journalism Dean Trevor Brown, would find and recommend at least one suitable candidate by Jan. 1. Basketball ticket prices raised, student seats lowered

RICHMOND, Ind. - Despite concerns by the IU Student Association, the board of trustees passed the athletics department's budget unanimously Friday. The budget plan will eliminate the athletic department budget deficit and allows the department to operate without the $30 student athletics fee. The plan also cuts 500 student basketball seats in Assembly Hall, which will be given to donors, and raises the price of student basketball tickets by $4 per game.

Brian Plotkin described it as a dream. In his final regular season home game, IU's co-captain scored the decisive overtime goal versus No. 1 Akron and ended the evening in a sea of cream and crimson as the fans stormed the field. On senior night, in front of 4,884 fans at Bill Armstrong Stadium, Plotkin and Jordan Chirico etched their names in the box score versus the Zips in the game's lone goal. Freshman striker Lee Nguyen played a cross from the right side of the six to Chirico who one-touched the ball to Plotkin. The Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy candidate said he had to get his right foot -- the weaker of the two -- on the ball but struck it hard enough to notch the game winner in overtime. "I was almost in a state of euphoria (when I dove on the field to celebrate the goal)," Plotkin said. "I was just happy. Everybody was going nuts and I just wanted to get off my feet so I just kinda dove. I've seen it on TV a few times, so I thought it might be fun to try." The goal was Plotkin's eighth of the season, keeping him on top of the Big Ten with 25 points. Nguyen now has 11 assists, while Chirico is third on the team with five.

IU doctor treated Armstrong

He would have never won a record-setting seven consecutive Tour de France titles. He would not have been named the Associated Press Athlete of the Year three years running. He probably would not be alive today had it not been for the work of Dr. Lawrence H. Einhorn, a leading clinical oncologist at the IU Cancer Center and distinguished professor.

Bayh postures for 2008 presidential race

From July to September, Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., raised $7.88 million -- twice as much as Indiana's other senator, Richard Lugar -- officially under the guise of his 2010 Senate campaign in the past year, said Bayh's spokeswoman, Meghan Keck. "Senator Bayh has traveled across the country primarily to help the Democratic Party and to help elect like-minded candidates running for office," Keck said.

Reporting class to tour New Orleans

Nine IU journalism graduate students and a professor are traveling to Mississippi, the Gulf Coast and New Orleans Wednesday in an effort to report on recovery efforts several months after Hurricane Katrina devastated the region. Journalism professor Carol Polsgrove and her Public Affairs Reporting class will drive to Mississippi and will return Nov. 14.

Faculty blast Herbert in emergency session

Faculty members will get a rare emergency session of the Bloomington Faculty Council to voice their discontent with IU President Adam Herbert's job performance, specifically his decision not to select College of Arts and Sciences Dean Kumble Subbaswamy as the next IUB chancellor. In a meeting organized following Herbert's decision, 130 faculty members signed a petition for the emergency BFC session. In an unofficial vote, more than 100 faculty members supported Subbaswamy for chancellor, said Political Science Chair Jeffrey Isaac.

Pacers burn Heat in early season battle

MIAMI -- Jermaine O'Neal scored 27 points, six of them in the final three minutes to help the Indiana Pacers recover from wasting a 14-point second-half lead and beat the Miami Heat 105-102 Thursday night. Ron Artest, in his first post-suspension game in Miami, added 22 for the Pacers -- who've won 13 of their last 14 regular-season meetings with Miami.
