Although I like to think of IU and its students as environmentally friendly and forward-thinking, we still depend on a large coal-burning power plant for our energy. Even more surprising is the fact that many students have no idea that there is a coal power plant on campus.

Folk music: More popular than you think

Since the legendary Bob Dylan visited the IU Auditorium on Monday, his music has softly sung in my ears. However, when people hear “folk music,” many do not understand the great impact that this unique genre has had on popular culture.

Women’s Club Soccer Team finishes 2nd in division

Senior Clare Crosh spoke to her teammates last Thursday with tears in her eyes. Oct. 29 marked the end of her athletic career on the IU Women’s Club Soccer Team – four years of chilly Saturday morning games, two-hour practices every Monday through Thursday and long hours fundraising for new equipment.

Confusion follows Eli Lilly ‘plant closing’

Break-up records are nothing new, but few seem as emotionally genuine as The Swell Season’s “Strict Joy.” Glen Hansard & Marketa Irgolva, who became a couple while filming their reality-blurring indie film hit “Once” (which won them an Academy Award for the song “Falling Slowly”), broke up at some point during the creation of “Strict Joy.”

“Battlestar Galactica” ended its run as one of the most critically acclaimed sci-fi shows in recent memory. To fill in some of the mythology blanks and tide fans over until the premiere of sister show “Caprica,” the SyFy has given “Battlestar” fans “The Plan.”

From hypnotizing guitar riffs and anticipation-gathering drum beats to ballad-heavy lyrics, Creed has brought it all to its new album “Full Circle.” It took seven years for this group to come together again, and perhaps surprisingly, the album is definitely different from past efforts.


Proggy, chuggy and synthy

“Misdirect” is a great word to include in the title of the new Between the Buried and Me record. Though it follows the same direction as 2007’s widely acclaimed “Colors,” “The Great Misdirect” is six songs of progressive metal that veers wildly from one genre to another on every track. Between the Buried and Me have forged a career out of these genre-hopping shenanigans and thankfully that continues here.

Sisters stick to winning formula for sixth album

Two years after “The Con” delighted ears, sister act Tegan and Sara deliver another dose of heady, unadulterated emotion that, like sunlight, both warms and sears.“Sainthood” might have sprung from the tear-stained pages of an angsty teen’s diary: touching, melodramatic and composed with an inhibition that can only be fostered by a small, metallic lock and carefully hidden key.
