Just FYI

·

Here are a few key terms that are useful to know around campus, so you can pretend you’re not really a freshman.

Habits of Hoosiers

IU traditions, beginning in 1820 when the school was founded, go deeper than candy-cane colors and a catchy tune. The Little 500 bicycle race, Hoosier basketball, the Kelley School of Business and the scenic campus are only a few of the attractions that create the “glory of old IU.”

Herman B Wells, father of IU

·

From 1938 until 1962, Herman B Wells served as University president. During his 25-year presidency, IU expanded to include the streets, buildings and student population that make it what it is today.

Students chart their courses, define degrees with abstract academics

·

Some degrees defy convention. One student  majors in comedy writing, while others pursue offbeat topics such as violin making or concert and festival production. A few years ago, a student created a major in beer. He studied entrepreneurial brewing in hopes of eventually opening his own microbrewery. Those zany degrees attract attention, but they’re just as tough as any other on campus.

Kinsey Institute fights for funding for sexuality research

·

Despite its groundbreaking contributions to science and society more than 60 years ago, the Kinsey Institute still maintains a system of steady research. Today researchers focus on health-related issues rather than shaking the foundations of public morality.

Shane Provost

The sounds of B-town

·

In a college town with one of the top music schools in the nation, there is bound to be local music talent. Throw in a variety of bars and live music venues, and almost every day of the week offers an opportunity to catch a listen.

Dean Goldsmith

Confessions of the student turned VIP

·

Last year was Pete Goldsmith’s first as IU’s Dean of Students. The alumnus tells us about his own days as a Hoosier, how he copes with student deaths, and why he wants to dine with the Queen of England.

Campus clocks chime almost 100 tunes

·

From the school fight song to “You Are My Sunshine,” the National Anthem to “Singin’ in the Rain,” the red clocks we pass on campus have a song for any day. Sure, it’s nice background music for a walk to class, but have you ever wondered just how these tunes are decided? We did, and decided to seek out the people behind the clockwork.

Sorority rush ends with new homes for chosen few

·

Libby Lienhoop was one of about 1,500 women to go through sorority recruitment in the 2009-10 academic year. Rush began in December with 19 Party and ended Monday with Bid Day. Knowing that IU has the most competitive recruitment processes in the country made Libby nervous, but above all, she was excited.
