Defense comes up big again in fifth road win

INDIANAPOLIS -- Thursday night's game between No. 4 IU and Butler was the epitome of an in-state grudge match. Records did not mean anything going into this game, and it was clear from the beginning that the Bulldogs did not care that the Hoosiers are one of the nation's best. IU (7-1-2) survived Butler's (3-5-1) physical play winning 2-0 in the final match of a five-game road trip. "It was one of our best performances," coach Jerry Yeagley said. "The first half was almost clinical. The score did not indicate the quality of play we had offensively."

No. 27 Hoosiers travel to Notre Dame for invite

For the last month there have been strong expectations from the women's cross country team. Apparently, the voters for the FinishLynx NCAA Women's Cross Country Poll are starting to listen. Earlier this week, the Hoosiers were ranked for the first time since 1990, as they moved to No. 27 in the nation after a strong showing and a fifth-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational last week.

Team refocuses on remainder of season during off week

Saturday, Memorial Stadium will sit in silence. And it won't bother the Hoosiers one bit. Saturday represents IU's only bye of the season, giving the team a week off as they prepare to take on the No. 19 Wisconsin Badgers next week. "Off-weeks have become such a common thing in college football that everyone has them," said coach Gerry DiNardo, contrasting his playing days at Notre Dame with the present.

Hoosiers shut out Bulldogs

INDIANAPOLIS --Throughout Indiana's storied 30-year soccer history, the Hoosiers have put up some impressive records, including a 46-game unbeaten streak in 1983 and 1984 and a reigning streak of five consecutive College Cup appearances. Thursday night's 2-0 victory over Butler gave this year's Hoosier squad a tie of a school record with the 1981 team.

Twins down Athletics in playoff opener

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Minnesota Twins shook off a serious case of the playoff jitters in plenty of time. A.J. Pierzynski had four hits, and Corey Koskie homered and drove in three runs as the Twins overcame an early deficit and a series of fielding blunders to beat the Oakland Athletics 7-5 Tuesday in the first game of the AL division series. In their first postseason appearance since winning the World Series in 1991, the Twins made three errors in the first two innings and fell behind 5-1 to A's ace Tim Hudson.

Vikings should cut ties with Moss

The year was 1998. One of the loudest names in the draft was a lanky receiver out of Marshall named Randy Moss. Moss's skills should have placed him in the top ten, but that "off-field distraction" title was worrisome -- too big of a chance to take for 20 teams. The Minnesota Vikings decided, though, that Moss was too good to pass up, and they took their chances. Moss's personality was too much for Bobby Bowden and the Florida State Seminoles. Much of Moss's collegiate career was played in the darkness of West Virginia because of his problematic reputation drove him away from the public spotlight.

Hoosiers to face Louisville

IU's struggling field hockey team will take to the field again tonight for a match-up with another top-notch opponent. The Hoosiers visit No. 11 Louisville at 7:30 p.m. in Tragger Stadium. IU is coming off of a tough weekend road trip in which they dropped both of their games. The team fell to the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday and were overpowered by Penn State squad, 6-1, on Sunday.

Depth key as men's cross country team positions for Big 10 title run

Cross country coaches routinely stress that a team is only as strong as its fifth man. With the depth sophomore Kurtis George provides, the Hoosiers are positioning themselves for a Big Ten title run. In the early part of the season, the team has used a strong pack to lead them to commanding victories. George made his presence felt in the pack.

Sophomore golfer hears hype

Even though the Hoosiers were not overly successful as a whole this weekend at the Northern Intercollegiate, a few individuals brought light to the tournament. Playing on their home course, one that coach Mike Mayer said does not yield many low scores, the team's experience was evident. The team tied for fifth place, shooting an 860.

Road-racing legends dream up American F-1 team

INDIANAPOLIS -- U.S. interest in Formula One racing has never been up to par with the interest in NASCAR or Indy car racing. But plans may be in the works to turn the tide in favor of Formula One. At least that's what U.S. road-racing legends Dan Gurney and Phil Hill are hoping for as they plan to start up an American Formula One team next season.

Hoosiers beat Buckeyes 3-1

The IU women's soccer team began its Big Ten schedule this weekend by going 1-1 on the road. Penn State defeated the Hoosiers in Happy Valley 3-0 on Friday, but IU rebounded with a 3-1 defeat of Ohio State Sunday. "Today the team earned an 'A' grade and an 'A' effort," coach Mick Lyon said in a statement after the win over Ohio State. "In talking to many of the coaches in the conference, the difference between the top teams and the teams in the middle of the pack is who finishes their chances. Today we really finished on our chances. Today was another step forward in the development of the program."

Grabavoy nets penalty kick to down Penn State

Penn State came within 5:44 of breaking IU's 31 game winning streak in Big Ten play Friday night in University Park, Penn. But the No. 5 Hoosiers prevailed with a 1-0 double overtime victory over the No. 12 ranked Nittany Lions. The victory was the Hoosiers' tenth straight victory over conference rival Penn State and extended IU's winning streak to 32 straight conference games. IU has now played two of its three conference road games, picking up wins over two other favorites to challenge the Hoosiers for the Big Ten regular season championship.

Undefeated Nittany Lions live up to their legacy

The Hoosiers were riding high after six straight wins, unprecedented individual statistics and two straight wins against ranked opponents. But, the No. 9 Penn State Nittany Lions were just too much, and the Hoosiers lost 3-0 and fell to 11-3 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten. Penn State was no easy task for the Hoosiers, as the nationally ranked Nittany Lions have only lost five home matches since 1995 and are only three years removed from a national title. Bolstered by 2,003-person strong Penn State crowd, the Nittany Lions always kept the Hoosiers playing catch-up. While PSU managed to keep the Hoosiers down, they maintained respect for IU's play.

Coming into the Roy Griak Invitation at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course, the women's cross-country team had finished first and second respectively in their first two meets of the season. After the results were added up Saturday afternoon, the Hoosiers finished fifth out of 22 teams with a score of 153. IU finished just four points behind Marquette. Michigan State, Arizona State and Providence College took the top three spots.
