A 'classic' test for Hoosiers

A little more than eight months ago, the IU women's basketball team lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers' magical season ended abruptly and with disappointment. After several practices and two exhibition games this year, IU begins the regular season this weekend along with its quest to return to the tournament. IU hosts the Hampton Inn/Fazoli's Classic as they play Wofford 6 p.m. Friday night at Assembly Hall. The second game between Ball State and Houston is set for 8 p.m. The winners battle in the Championship 4 p.m. Saturday, while the consolation is at 2 p.m.

Walk-ons take different paths to making basketball team

For 45 agonizing minutes, freshman Joe Haarman sat outside IU men's basketball coach John Treloar's office waiting for the news of whether or not he would be the next walk-on to join the team. Haarmon watched two other players walk in the office and get the news, including junior Jason Stewart, who got his good news right before Haarmon.

No love lost between rivals IU and Purdue

The hatred between the Hoosiers and Purdue runs deep. One hundred six years deep. One of the nation's most storied rivalries will take place again this weekend as IU travels to West Lafayette this Saturday.

Team gives back to community

Many students can remember the athletes they looked up to when they were younger and chased down for autographs around Assembly Hall. Local women's basketball fans are given the chance to interact with the IU team tonight at College Mall.

Tourney tradition changes over years

After using the historic Butler Fieldhouse to host its boys' basketball state championship in 1971, the Indiana High School Athletic Association stopped using the building. The Fieldhouse was used for 25 consecutive years (39 in all), but it was an understandable break from tradition. Buildings do get old and the huge capacity it could once hold was now not as large as new, bigger buildings.

Giving thanks

As 'Turkey Time' approaches, I thought that it would be a good idea to glance over the sports world and give thanks to those who deserve it. Thank you Major League Baseball; you actually realized that it might be a bad idea to upset the fans, and avoided a strike. Thank you, Marc Bulger for going 5-0 as a starter and proving once again that any ol' scrub can successfully quarterback the St. Louis Rams and win. Maybe now, finally, people will realize that Kurt Warner was never anything special, and perhaps the success has to do with a terrific offensive surrounding.

Of the 21 schools in the Big Ten and Pac-10, only one has never played in the Rose Bowl -- Arizona. Of the 21 schools in the Big Ten and Pac-10, only one had failed to win a conference football game prior to last weekend -- Arizona. Of all the schools in the country, only one had 40 players approach the university president with complaints about verbal abuse from its head coach -- Arizona.

IU boasts tough schedule

Last weekend, the IU hockey team faced two tough opponents on the road. This weekend, the team will face two top-ranked teams at home. Next weekend, IU will take the ice against a 7-0-0 Liberty University. See a pattern developing? The team is in the middle of one of the toughest schedules any collegiate hockey team will undertake this year. The Hoosiers conference, the Great Midwest Hockey League, sent five of six teams to the national tournament last year, and IU coach Rich Holdeman said he expects all six teams to be in Anaheim, Calif., this year for the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II tournament.

Hoosiers looking to make a run at nationals

For the first time since 1990 the IU women's cross country team is headed back to the NCAA Championship. On Sunday the Hoosiers finished fourth overall in their regional with the top two teams automatically advancing. Yesterday, however, the Hoosiers along with five other teams from the region were given at large bids to the NCAA Championship.

In Indiana, players are gods

The line from Hickory High School principal Myra Fleener in the movie Hoosiers was used in a negative manner. "A basketball hero around here is treated like a God." But for Bobby Plump and the 1954 Milan Indians, being treated like a God isn't as bad as it sounds. "Let me put it this way," Plump said in a Feb. 2001 article for the Palladium-Item. "If I had missed it (the shot), I wouldn't be standing here talking to you today."

Team gains national ranking

Men's cross country coach Robert Chapman wants to know how many top teams there are at IU. "How many top-15 programs do we have this school?," the coach asked. In any event, his team became one yesterday as the new poll released by the NCAA ranked the Hoosier men as No. 15 in the nation. "I'm really proud of these guys," Chapman said. "They've done an amazing job, and everybody has played an integral part.

Hoosiers disappointed with seed for tournament

Where's the BCS when you need it? The IU men's soccer team has spent the majority of the season ranked in the top five in the nation. The Hoosiers' reputation precedes them having advanced to the College Cup 15 times in the team's 29-year existence. But some players said these records meant little to the NCAA selection committee. "We may have gotten the shaft a little bit," senior Ryan Mack said. "I think it's good for us to get a shot in the face, so we realize where we are right now, and what we need to do to get ready."

Calm, quiet linebacker learning to lead on field

His football coach calls him the quiet type. So do some of his teammates. He even considers himself a goofy guy. But when sophomore linebacker Herana-Daze Jones steps on the field, he is all business. Jones is second on the team with 66 solo tackles and 32 assists for a total of 98 despite missing last Saturday's game against Penn State with a shoulder injury. He is averaged 9.8 tackles per game which is good enough for fourth in the Big Ten conference for all games played.

'Hoosiers' comparing the movie with the real story

Whenever a movie is based on a true story, it begs the question how much of it is fact and how much is fiction. So how much of "Hoosiers" really did stay true to the story that the movie was based on? "The only thing that was exactly the same was the last second shot," said Ray Craft, who was a starting guard on the "real" team, the 1954 Milan Indians. "They tried to authenticate it as much as they could. I guess we didn't have as much controversy, though."

Faulk on sidelines for Monday night

ST. LOUIS -- Marshall Faulk was scratched from the St. Louis Rams' game against the Chicago Bears on Monday night. Faulk left last week's victory over the Chargers with a strained tendon in his left foot and a sprained right ankle, and did not practice last week. Coach Mike Martz said Saturday night that Faulk would run a bit before the game, but he did not dress.

Hoosiers hold out for Big Ten tourney

The men's tennis team was eliminated from the Big Ten Singles Championships on the second of three days of the tournament. Only two Hoosiers made it to the final 16. Sophomore Jakub Praibis suffered a tough loss to Ohio State's senior Vincent Ng, losing 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore Ryan Recht played a intense match against freshman Andrew Wakefield from Penn State. Recht lost in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.

Postseason tourney bid in Hoosiers' grasp

Dropping two matches against conference rivals Ohio State and the 13th ranked Penn State in a single week, the IU volleyball team has fallen to seventh in the conference with an 8-8 record. The stumbles have caused IU to lose some of its thrust in trying to secure a 2002 NCAA Tournament bid.

Team opens league season with losses

The IU ice hockey team started the Great Midwest Hockey League season with a pair of road losses against the University of Michigan and Oakland University. The Hoosiers struck at the end of the first period on Friday against Michigan when freshman forward Pete Johnson scored his fourth of the year on a pass from sophomore defenseman Todd Lorenger. Michigan responded immediately, less than two minutes into the period. Junior forward Matt Howard again put the Hoosiers ahead in the second, but Michigan answered shortly after with a powerplay goal and added another powerplay goal to go up 3-2 in the third.

Johnson runs wild on Hoosiers

Penn State senior running back Larry Johnson needed 158 yards Saturday to break the school's single season rushing record. Johnson cruised to 194 yards in the first half alone on his way to setting several records on the day in a 58-25 win over the Hoosiers. The IU defense had no answer for Johnson. He finished the day with 28 carries for 327 yards and four touchdowns. IU only had 275 yards of total offense. The defense has now given up 200 points in their last four games.
