No. 9 Hoosiers look to bring home NCAA title

·

The No. 9 water polo team will compete in their first NCAA Championship this weekend at the University of California San Diego in La Jolla, Calif. The Hoosiers' first game is at 1:30 p.m. Saturday against No. 1 seed -- and last year's national champion -- Stanford Cardinal. The Hoosiers played the Cardinal earlier this year at the Stanford Invitational, losing 15-3.

Sixth place puts NCAAs in doubt

·

A miracle will be needed for the men's golf team to have an opportunity to play in the postseason, coach Mike Mayer said. In the Hoosiers' last tournament of the season -- the 2003 Big Ten Championships -- expectations were as high as their hopes for a run to the regional tournament. But as luck had it, a sixth place finish this weekend might have ended what hope the men in khaki and crimson had. The team will find out at 5 p.m. today when the NCAA releases its regional bids. "It's kind of disappointing," freshman Scott Seibert said. "The team didn't play as well as we would have liked to." Coming out firing, IU slowed down and eventually finished the tournament at an almost dead stop. After the first round, the Hoosiers were three strokes out of first place with a one-over-par 285, a tempo which was kept for the first nine holes of the second round.

Team ends season in loss

After a weekend of ups and downs, one word can best be used to describe the Hoosiers performance in the Big Ten Championships this weekend: bittersweet. While the team had two rowers named to the All Big Ten team and had two boats advance to the grand finals, the Hoosiers finished last in overall standings and failed to send any varsity boats to the grand finals.

Season ends on high note

·

The IU softball team ended up on the losing end of a 6-0 rout for Purdue's senior day, but the Hoosiers returned the favor to the Boilermakers with a 3-0 win Sunday. IU finished the season with a 19-31 record, which is actually the Hoosiers' best win total since the 1997 season when IU went 27-21.

Nationals next for cyclists

·

While the Little 500 passed just over a week ago, some IU students had a completely different caliber of bicycle racing on their mind -- the Collegiate Cycling Nationals. Nationals are a three-day event that splits the competition into three events including road racing on a hilly 60-mile track, and student riders in the IU Cycling Club will be taking part.

Big Tens may be end of the road for seniors

·

All good things must come to an end. Everyone realizes this, but when it happens no one is prepared for it. Sunday at the 2003 Big Ten Championships was possibly the last time seniors Aldo Jordan and captain Ben Davidson suited up for the IU men's golf team.

Stuck in the middle with Penn State

It wouldn't be surprising if IU coach Bob Morgan was found humming the classic oldies hit "Stuck In the Middle With You" this weekend as his Hoosiers, tied for fourth with Penn State, prepare to face the Nittany Lions in a four-game set in Happy Valley.

Ewing Jr. is a Hoosier

·

Patrick Ewing Jr. will officially don the cream and crimson next fall. Ewing, who earlier verbally committed to IU, signed a national letter of intent to play for the Hoosiers Thursday. IU coach Mike Davis said the addition of Ewing, who is the son of 11-time NBA All Star Patrick Ewing, will bolster the team in both rebounding and shooting. "We're real excited to have Pat here at Indiana," Davis said in a statement. "He has a chance to come in and contribute right away. Pat can do a little bit of everything -- he's strong and aggressive on the boards, and he can also step out and shoot it as well." Davis added that Ewing's strong basketball lineage has helped mold him into a top player.

Super senior hopes for winning close

·

As senior Danielle Carruthers' collegiate track career draws to a close with only four meets left until the national championships, it is safe to say that most people will remember her as an outstanding hurdler. This would not be incorrect. In her four years as a Hoosier she has accumulated numerous titles and honors for her accomplishments in both the indoor 60-meter hurdles and outdoor 100-meter hurdles, including finishing as the national runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles at this year's indoor national championships. Last season, Carruthers established herself as a nationally-ranked hurdler after running the fastest time in the country at the Big Ten Championships. Though her skills as a hurdler will be sorely missed next year, they are not the only contributions she has made to the team. Carruthers is also a key member of both the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams, and will also be counted on to score points in the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the conference meet.
