Dennison wins Indiana Women's Amateur title IU senior All-American Karen Dennison won the 80th Indiana Women's Amateur Golf tournament at Meridian Hills Country Club in Indianapolis. The LPGA Giant Eagle Classic participant finished with a 3-over-par 215, which placed her at five shots ahead of her nearest competitor. Dennison birdied on each of the fifth, sixth and 14th holes but bogeyed on three holes.

Kerr cites DiNardo as reason for leaving IU

When building a house, if one doesn't have a steady foundation, then the house isn't going to be able to withstand the test of time. The same goes for football. An integral part of IU's football program recently decided to transfer to another Big Ten school. John Kerr, a sophomore linebacker, plans to attend Ohio State and join the Buckeye football program.

NASCAR comes to Indiana

This weekend will bring hundreds of thousands of race fans to the Indianapolis for the 10th running of the Brickyard 400. This year's race will boast some of the best racers in the NASCAR Winston Cup series.

Mears' maturity impresses

The name Mears is synonymous with excellence in open-wheel racing, but the youngest member of the family has chosen a different road in pursuit of stardom. Uncle Rick won the Indianapolis 500 a record-tying four times, and father Roger was an off-road champion. Casey Mears decided to try NASCAR, and despite the growing pains of a rookie, he is making an impression that belies his 25 years. "I always try to think things out rather than let the excitement or disappointment dictate decisions on what I may or may not do with the car," he said. "Just growing up in a racing family, I've learned so much." Uncle Rick won the Indianapolis 500 a record-tying four times, and father Roger was an off-road champion. Korey Stringer's widow plans to sue

MINNEAPOLIS -- An attorney for Korey Stringer's widow said she will sue the NFL on Monday, alleging that the league's policies led to Stringer's heat stroke death during Minnesota Vikings training camp in 2001. Stan Chesley said Kelci Stringer's suit would also name football helmet maker Riddell Sports Group Inc., and some NFL medical advisers. He said the federal lawsuit would include a wrongful death claim on behalf of Stringer's widow and son, and a class action claim on behalf of all NFL players.

No ID yet of remains

WACO, Texas - Investigators collected evidence Sunday in a field where they found a decomposed body, not far from where they were searching for missing Baylor basketball player Patrick Dennehy. There was still no identification of the remains found Friday, and officials said the process could take several days.

Lance Armstrong wins fifth championship title

PARIS -- Sipping champagne to celebrate, Lance Armstrong won his hardest but sweetest Tour de France title Sunday, a record-tying fifth straight victory that places him alongside the greatest cyclists ever. The 31-year-old Texan and Spanish great Miguel Indurain are now the only two riders to win the sport's most grueling and prestigious race five times in a row, a record Armstrong plans to break next year.

Records broken at swim meet

The 2003 Speedo Champions Series featured 551 swimmers and 85 teams this weekend at the Student Recreational Sports Center. Olympic qualifying times were broken in the event by three different swimmers in four separate events. Nick Cenci, 20, and Alyssa Kiel, 16, broke the Olympic qualifying times in the men's 200-meter butterfly and the women's 400-meter individual medley, respectively.

Matt LoVecchio on preseason list for award

Entering his first season in a Hoosier uniform, junior Matt LoVecchio is going to have a lot of eyes watching him after his successful two-year stint at Notre Dame. Now there's another set watching him -- The Davey O'Brien Foundation. The foundation awards the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award to the top quarterback in the country, and LoVecchio has been listed as a preseason favorite for the award.

Crocker sets world record

BARCELONA, Spain -- Ian Crocker looked at the clock and thought there was a big mistake. No mistake. Crocker, not U.S. teammate Michael Phelps, set a world record Saturday in the 100-meter butterfly finals at the World Swimming Championships. When a startled Crocker saw his time, he shouted "what," gave a palms-up shrug of disbelief, then embraced Phelps across the lane ropes.

WACO, Texas -- Despite a day of fruitless searching for missing Baylor basketball player Patrick Dennehy, police expect to find his body based on information from his former teammate, who is charged with his murder.

'Visable evidence apparent' in alleged attack

EAGLE, Colo. -- The 19-year-old woman who accused Kobe Bryant of sexually assaulting her had "visible evidence" of the alleged attack a week later, one of her friends said Tuesday. Luke Bray declined to be more specific out of respect for his friend and her family.

IU nabs highly ranked recruits for '04

In an attempt to solidify its success in the future, IU has garnered a very talented recruiting class for 2004-05. The headliners of that class are D.J. White, a 6-foot-8-inch, 233-pound forward from Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Josh Smith, a 6-foot-9-inch power forward, who played at McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Ga., last season. White, who made his intentions clear while playing at the Nike All-America Camp in Indianapolis, is considered by many recruiting services to be one of the top 10 players in the class of 2004.

Curtis a surprise winner at British Open

SANDWICH, England -- A wacky week at the British Open held one final surprise, and it was the biggest of them all: Ben Curtis holding the claret jug. An unknown PGA Tour rookie in his first major championship, Curtis outlasted Tiger Woods and a collection of All-Stars for perhaps the most stunning conclusion to a Grand Slam event in 90 years.

Hoosier holds her own

Just a few months removed from her IU graduation, former Hoosier women's swimming and diving star Sara Hildebrand had an impressive weekend at the FINA World Diving Championships this weekend. The former Olympian finished in sixth place in the 3-meter springboard event and placed third in the 3-meter synchronized event preliminaries with IU junior Cassandra Cardinell.

Lakers sign Malone, Payton to contracts

LOS ANGELES -- True to their word, future Hall of Famers Karl Malone and Gary Payton signed contracts with the Los Angeles Lakers. And they did so at just about the earliest possible moment. Team spokesman John Black said Malone and Payton, who verbally committed to join the Lakers at discount prices last week, signed shortly after midnight EDT on Wednesday.

The hardest still to come for Armstrong

MARSEILLE, France -- Ahead of the pack at the Tour de France, Lance Armstrong can't help but peek over his shoulder. The four-time champion held the overall lead by a handful of seconds following Tuesday's 10th stage. He is by no means clear of the chasing pack just a few days before Friday's individual time trials.
