Mile-high All-Star game is LeBron's first

DENVER -- A mile above sea level, just a little to the left of America's midsection, the NBA All-Star game has arrived lacking a clear-cut theme. It will be LeBron James' first appearance and Shaquille O'Neal's 12th in the league's showcase event, and in between those two on the frequency meter are 22 other well-deserving players of various shapes and sizes -- though there's nary a Nugget to represent the host team, and no compelling story line to reel in the casual fan.

Diving records smashed in Big Ten's

Apparently, size does matter. Penn State capitalized on the depth of its squad Thursday night at the Women's Big Ten Championships in Bloomington. Penn State took the lead after the second night of competition, telling the rest of the Big Ten they were going to have to play catch up if they are going to take the lead from them. "We came out on fire today especially in the prelims," Penn State coach Bill Dorenkott said. "We are pretty excited about our swimming today and one of our big assets is the depth we have."

Texas A&M-CC wins on Hoosiers' home court 59-49

When IU hit Branch McCracken court Thursday night the Hoosiers had the chance to win back-to-back games for the first time since mid-December. Instead IU will have to start back at square one after a loss to Texas A&M Corpus Christi 59-49.

IU looks for every win to be able to 'dance'

Heading north for Sunday's game against Michigan, the Hoosiers will look to their seven-game winning streak against the Wolverines as inspiration to begin a stretch they need to stay above .500 for a shot at post-season play.

Chargers put franchise tag on star quarterback

SAN DIEGO -- For a guy who wasn't expected to do much last season, Drew Brees sure got a nice raise. The San Diego Chargers used their franchise tag Thursday on Brees and will offer him a one-year contract at just more than $8 million. The quarterback made $1.56 million in base pay last season, when he led the Chargers out of the NFL's basement to the AFC West title at 12-4. The Chargers needed to put the tag on Brees, the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year, to keep him from leaving as an unrestricted free agent.

He sees only his opponent, senses only the ball as it is slowly thrown up in the air and smacked down at what seems to be a 90-degree angle by his larger, taller competitor. In defiance, Praibis counters the player's power with grace, slicing a return to the corner that dies under the outstretched hand of his defeated foe.

Big Ten's come to B-town

The Big Ten is home to seven of the top 25 women's swimming and diving teams in the country, according to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The Hoosiers sit in the middle of those seven at No. 18, but their roster size falls much shorter. When the 10 other Big Ten teams come to IU this weekend for the Big Ten Championship, most of their rosters will have more than 30 women.

Despite self-imposed sanction, Buckeyes prove they can still play like contenders

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- They still suit up. They still play their games. Their fans even still come. They have nothing to lose and nothing to gain because of self-imposed sanctions, but that doesn't matter for the Ohio State Buckeyes. By March 13, the Buckeyes will be back on campus after playing in the Big Ten Tournament, snuggled on their couches and have their televisions tuned to CBS for March Madness.

Hoosiers fall in potential bubble buster

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- When the IU basketball team leaves the state of Indiana, they can't win a game. Coming into Tuesday's game at Ohio State, the Hoosiers hadn't won outside of the state in more than a year. That stretch continued as IU dropped a 57-44 contest in Columbus' Value City Arena as the Buckeyes capitalized on an 18-4 second half run for the victory. The defeat was IU's 10th consecutive outside of Indiana -- the last win at Penn State on Feb. 11, 2004.

Vaden, White 'take a shot' at IUSA offices

Two influential IU freshmen are hoping to expand their game from the hardwood to student government. Freshmen basketball players Robert Vaden and D.J. White are running for IU Student Association Congress in the University Division for the Kirkwood ticket. Adding more intrigue is Maggie Daniels, Gov. Mitch Daniels' daughter and IU freshman, who also is running for University Division representative for Kirkwood. There are six University Division representatives; Vaden, White and Daniels are three of Kirkwood's six candidates.

Davis makes claim for marking Charlotte a win
