Hoosiers close season at Big Ten tourney

This weekend's Big Ten Singles Championships will not only mark the end of the fall season for the IU men's tennis team, it will also serve as a short-term rubric for piecing together an ever-evolving Hoosier lineup. "We've been having a good fall practice," said IU head coach Ken Hydinger. "If we want to be a team that wants to be a real contender and not a pretender, somewhere down the line we have to start winning matches."

Women's: Team looks for bid to national meet

Looking to finalize an NCAA tournament berth, the IU women's cross country team will play host to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at 12:15 p.m. Saturday at the IU golf course. Coming off a fourth-place finish at the Big Ten meet, the Hoosiers will attempt to finalize their résumé and receive a bid to nationals.

IU plays host to weekend Regionals

The injury bug dealt the men's cross country team a tough hand this week. After showing steady improvement and growing team cohesion, two key runners were diagnosed with season-ending injuries. Senior All-American John Jefferson, who has been plagued by injuries throughout his cross country career and freshman Tim McLeod, who put up promising performances early in the season, have both incurred stress fractures. Neither will compete Saturday on IU's home course in the Great Lakes Regional, the final meet prior to the NCAA Championships.

Hoosiers welcome Brescia for 2nd exhibition game against Brescia

With its game against reigning national champion Baylor University looming on the horizon, the IU women's basketball team will play its second exhibition game Saturday against Brescia University. The Hoosiers are coming off a close 70-63 victory in their first exhibition game of the season versus the Hoosier Lady Stars last Nov. 3. Freshman forward Whitney Thomas led the team with 15 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

Sophomore gunning for starting role

As the IU women's volleyball season winds down, competition for the six starting positions is sure to heat up. The Hoosiers head to the Great Lakes State this weekend to play Michigan and Michigan State, and IU coach Katie Weismiller is intent on expanding her repertoire of players. And lately, a dark horse has emerged to earn her share of court time. Sophomore outside hitter Gabrielle Allison has contributed more than just kills to the Hoosier scoreboard. Her conditioning and fervid work ethic has recently had Allison flirting with the starting lineup.

IU faces first half of must wins

Coach Terry Hoeppner said the Hoosiers have their "backs against the walls" after losing last weekend. IU will have to win its last two games of the season to become bowl eligible and end its four-game losing streak. As if that wasn't enough of a challenge, IU will be confined within the walls of the Big House this weekend. The Hoosiers will visit the No. 21 Michigan Wolverines Saturday -- a team they have lost 47 out of 56 games against in the series history.

IU to face Tar Heels in 1st round of NCAA tournament

For the IU field hockey team, the road to the Final Four begins in Winston-Salem, N.C., the site of its first-round matchup with No. 5 University of North Carolina. The Hoosiers and the Tar Heels square off at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Xavier Keeling becomes first 2006-07 recruit

IU head coach Mike Davis is doing his part to add a little cream to the crimson state of Alabama. The Alabama native added two players from his home state two years ago with sophomore D.J. White and senior-transfer Marco Killingsworth. Thursday, he stole another prospect from Alabama by officially signing 6-foot-6 forward Xavier Keeling.

Filling the paint

The absence of sophomore forward D.J. White left the Hoosiers with many questions, but senior forward Marco Killingsworth had all the answers in Thursday night's 96-49 home win over the University of Indianapolis. Killingsworth scored 16 of his 22 points in the paint, seeing limited action in the second half. Coach Mike Davis rested the senior and the rest of the starters for most of the second half in light of the 65-28 lead at the time.

Hoosiers enter Big Tens with No. 3 seed

It's been 365 days since the IU men's soccer team lost to Michigan State in the Big Ten men's soccer tournament. The Hoosiers said they want to win this weekend's Big Ten tournament with hopes of securing a top-four seed in the NCAA tournament. Any top-four seed guarantees a team home field advantage until the College Cup.

Kline to start for injured White tonight

If there is a blessing to the injury of sophomore forward D.J. White, it's the timing. Just two days after the announcement that White will miss at least six weeks with a broken foot, the No. 23-ranked Hoosiers welcome the Division II University of Indianapolis Greyhounds for their final exhibition game. Fifth-year senior Sean Kline will take White's starting position after scoring 13 points in IU's last game against St. Joseph's College (Ind.).

Foot to keep White out 6 to 8 weeks

Sophomore forward D.J. White doesn't know how he injured his left foot, but he knows how long it will keep him out -- at least six weeks. Monday's MRI revealed that White broke his left foot during last Friday's 93-65 win over St. Joseph's College (Ind.). White said although he doesn't remember how or when the injury occurred, he has to deal with it regardless.

Colon wins AL Cy Young Award in one-sided voting

NEW YORK -- Bartolo Colon won the American League Cy Young Award on Tuesday in a surprisingly one-sided vote, becoming the first Angels pitcher in 41 years to take home the honor. Colon, who led the league with 21 wins, was listed first on 17 ballots and second on the other 11 for 118 points in voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He was the only pitcher named on every ballot, easily beating out New York Yankees reliever Mariano Rivera, who received 68 points. Rivera got eight first-place votes, while 2004 winner Johan Santana of the Minnesota Twins received three and finished third.

Back home again: Former IU standout Damon Bailey to coach high school team

INDIANAPOLIS -- Bedford North Lawrence didn't have to search far for a new boys basketball coach. When the Stars were faced with a coaching vacancy, barely three weeks before the start of the new season, they turned to their most famous alum, Damon Bailey, who led the school to the state championship 15 years ago and finished as the greatest scorer in Indiana high school basketball history. "Our head coach resigned last week. ... I talked with Damon at length a couple times and he decided he wanted to take it on," Bedford athletic director Jeff Callahan said Tuesday.

Hoosiers dominate in weekend sweep

During the weekend, the IU hockey team showed offense can be the name of the game in a sport usually dominated by defense. The Hoosiers completed a two-game sweep over the University of Dayton 9-1 Friday and 6-1 Saturday at the Frank Southern Center. Friday night, the Hoosiers mustered 70 shots en route to a blowout victory. Led by freshman forward David Murray, who had two goals and four assists, IU dominated from start to finish. IU out-shot the Flyers 33-5 in the first period, and 70-17 in the game.

Phillies pitcher Urbina held in Venezuela pending formal charge of attempted murder

CARACAS, Venezuela - Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Ugueth Urbina was arrested and held Tuesday pending a formal charge of attempted murder. Last month, Urbina and a group of men allegedly attacked five workers with machetes and poured gasoline on them in an attempt to set them on fire. All five were injured, some of them with cuts and one with burns on the back and right arm, police said.

Coach Hoeppner still set on Hoosiers 'playing 12' this year

IU head coach Terry Hoeppner has been saying it all year. He wants his team to "play 12." He's even sported jewelry with his slogan, a faux-Livestrong bracelet he's not willing to discard quite yet, despite IU's ever-closing postseason window of opportunity. "We have two more chances and I'm not taking it off," Hoeppner said in a statement. "Someone is going to have to rip it off."

Hoosiers make NCAA tourney field for 1st time

The IU field hockey team packed The City Grille and watched the large-screen TV with anticipation as College Sports TV aired the NCAA tournament selection show Tuesday night. The verdict was finally in -- "Indiana" was read, and the Hoosiers were in the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history.

Pete Rose Jr. pleads guilty to distributing drug to teammates

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Pete Rose Jr., the son of baseball's all-time hits leader, pleaded guilty Monday to charges that he distributed GBL, a drug sometimes sold as a steroid alternative, to his minor league teammates.

IU's Bashore named Big Ten Player of the Year

With a 16-4 record and an NCAA berth imminent, the IU field hockey team has enjoyed the most successful season in its history -- and more than just the fans are taking notice. Last week, the Big Ten Conference named senior midfielder Kayla Bashore Big Ten Player of the Year. It is the first such honor for any Hoosier field hockey player in the program's six-year history.
