Philosophy, religion, ethics — 'The Matrix'

·

Doctoral student Josh Alexander saw "The Matrix" in 1999 purely for entertainment. He left the theater not only feeling amused but contemplating the sci-fi film. Like millions of other viewers, he realized the movie's deeper than its innovative special effects. Since its release, college professors, students and other fans have pondered, ripped apart and scrutinized the movie's dense messages relating to philosophy, religion and ethics. Books, scholarly articles and college courses have pondered the philosophical thoughts: Is Neo a Christ-like character? Do you take the red pill or the blue pill? What's real and what's virtual?

Turning 'trix: Moviegoers don costumes for 'Matrix' opening

·

When "The Matrix" opened in 1999, the question was, "What is the Matrix?" When the sequel, "The Matrix Reloaded," opened last week, the question was, "Would anyone dress in costume for opening night?" "Star Trek" fans have been going various places (movies, conventions, the grocery store) in costume for decades now, and recently fans of the "Star Wars" movies attracted attention by dressing as Jedi, Wookies and, of course, Darth Vader, for the openings of "The Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the Clones."

My country tears of thee

·

Ferlinghetti sung his ode to the burned-out businessmen, those who left their neckties on the lampposts and became Troggs of the night. And so goes the worries of the world, buildings blown up by Arabs in Arab land, it sounds like Los Angeles to me. Why should anyone care when it's not happening to them? Oh yeah, didn't it?
