Suspected militants killed by Saudi security forces

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- Saudi security forces Wednesday killed two suspected militants linked to a weekend shooting and hostage-taking in the kingdom's oil production heartland where 22 people were slain, the Interior Ministry said.

Faculty, students differ on new Iraq

IU begins search for new AD

For the third time in four years, a new athletics director will lead the IU athletics department, IU President Adam Herbert announced Thursday. Herbert also announced the formation of a 16-member committee to choose the next director, which will be chaired by IU Alumni Association President Ken Beckley.

Adidas named as apparel supplier

IU will change from a swoosh to three stripes when the athletics department changes apparel suppliers from Nike to Adidas July 1. The department also announced that current Athletics Director Terry Clapacs will step down to make way for a new director to be determined in September.

Tornados hit Indiana over weekend

A tornado hit northeast of Ellettsville Sunday afternoon damaging 23 houses and causing about $45,000 in clean-up. No fatalities or injuries were reported in Monroe County. One house in Ellettsville was completely destroyed while others sustained minor damages, said John Hooker III, director of Monroe County Emergency Management. Damage assessment is still being conducted.

Soggy Indy 500 doesn't dampen spirits

INDIANAPOLIS -- Before Buddy Rice took the checkered flag at the Indianapolis 500 Sunday, the rain had scared off about half of Kevin Kuehn's group of friends from Green Bay, Wis. But Kuehn, sporting a Coors Light hat and a red rain jacket, said after the race that the wait was worth it. "It's Indy," he said, as the track-side screen flashed a tornado warning. "We'll be back next year." The day at the track began and ended with ominous storm clouds and downpours, but somehow, amid a windy, stormy afternoon, there was time for 180 laps and an exciting finish -- a payoff for thousands of soggy, but enthusiastic, race fans.

'Flakers' fleece the Finals?

Go ahead and hand out the trophy. If the Lakers haven't blown it by now, they aren't going to anytime soon. But stop right there when comparing this year's Lakers to Laker greats of old. Winning their fourth NBA championship in the "post-M.J. era" earns L.A. the right to be talked about as one of the toughest teams to beat. But in my mind, the collection of pro basketball's biggest divas is far from great as they manage to squeak lazily by instead of etching their way into NBA lore as one of the greatest squads ever.

Rice battles weather, other drivers to win Indianapolis 500

INDIANAPOLIS -- If there was one nap that David Letterman was glad he never had the chance to take, it was on Sunday. Rain dominated the day, delaying the start of the 88th running of the Indianapolis 500 for two hours and nine minutes past its scheduled 11 a.m. start, thus delaying Buddy Rice's saturated run to the finish line. Once the race got started though, Rice showed the field and the spectators why he was on the pole, sitting in the lead for the first 13 laps before being overtaken by Alex Barron.

Neither 'Right' nor 'Wrong,' just bad

It should be enough to just say that the new Skinny Puppy album is industrial, one of those genres that was really cool and edgy for a few months in the mid-'90s, but like other popular-for-an-instant musical gimmicks (ska, for example), it never went anywhere; its highest achievement was somewhere between Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral and KMFDM's Money.

IU provides glasses to charity program

Three thousand pairs of new eyeglass frames were donated to the IU School of Optometry from Spectera Inc. May 20. The donation is valued at approximately $20,000 and is intended to honor the active participation of the IU School of Optometry in Volunteer Optometric Services for Humanity, an organization which provides eye care worldwide to the underprivileged.
