Team hopes to add wins before regionals

The IU women's cross country team will compete Saturday in Terre Haute at the Pre-NCAAs, a race where the team will look to help pave the road to a nationals appearance. IU coach Judy Wilson said the meet is important to the team because the team needs to accumulate wins over other teams before its regional meet, the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, and ultimately prove its worthiness of an appearance at a nationals meet that is only 5 1/2 weeks away.

Sammy BBQ to raise money for Israeli soldiers

IU community members can help give an Israeli soldier a college education -- and all they have to do is eat a hamburger. The Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity will hold its first annual barbecue philanthropy event, Grillin' and Chillin' from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., Thursday night at the Sammy Café, located in the backyard of their house, 1500 N. Jordan Ave.

Schilling will not start Game 5 because of ankle BOSTON -- Curt Schilling will miss a start for the first time all season -- and just when the Red Sox need him most. The Boston ace was scratched from his scheduled start in Game 5 of the AL championship series against the New York Yankees because of an injured ankle that was too sore to test Thursday. Manager Terry Francona wouldn't rule Schilling out for a later start -- if the Red Sox make it that far.

Past troubles lead professor to aid others

ST. LOUIS - Rain or shine, the St. Louis Cardinals' big bats always seem to come through in the end. Albert Pujols led off the eighth inning with a tiebreaking home run, Scott Rolen followed with his second homer of the game and the Cardinals stormed back to beat Houston 6-4 on a miserable Thursday night for a 2-0 lead in the NL championship series.

Girl Scouts -- not just for little girls

While many people may think Girl Scouts ends after grade school, that couldn't be further from the truth. Girl Scouting can go all the way through college. In fact, IU has its very own Campus Girl Scouts chapter. The chapter consists of four officers, a faculty advisor and members.

Famous drummer to talk about life, career

Max Weinberg of Meat Loaf, Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" will be speaking at 7.pm. Monday in the Indiana Memorial Union's Alumni Hall. Junior Cody Bell, director of Union Board's Comedy Committee, said Weinberg will talk about his life and career. "He should give a very interesting perspective about his experience with (E Street Band and Max Weinberg 7)," Bell said.

Asian cooking demonstrations share culture

Bloomington residents embrace many types of ethnic cuisines, and IU student groups are no exception. Besides trying the countless ethnic restaurants that line the streets of Bloomington, students can take part in an alternative ethnic experience right on campus. Every month, a different Asian Student Association holds a cooking demonstration at the Asian Culture Center.

Dance Company dazzles

The Hubbard Street Dance Company gave a dazzling, performance Wednesday night at the IU Auditorium. They danced their way into audience members' hearts. The program incorporated a diverse use of contemporary dance styles while holding on to modern and classical ballet-based technique. The dancers' energy throughout the program was definitely an attention grabber because their energy level did not falter once.

IMU shows Mongolian art

The Indiana Memorial Union Gallery is a quiet place to study, meet with classmates and enjoy various works of art. This month, two Mongolian artists are displaying their work there. Utilizing bold lines and vibrant colors, this husband-and-wife team portrays different aspects of Mongolian culture in their works. Munkhtsetseg-Anar "Mugi" Jakhaajav was born and lives in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia. Her works are portraits of Mongolian women in traditional dress with elaborate hair-dos. The colors are bold and her works have strong focal point lines.

Bomb attacks in Baghdad's Green Zone kill 10

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Insurgents penetrated Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone and detonated explosives at a market and a popular café Thursday, killing 10 people, including four American civilians, in the first bombings inside the compound housing the U.S. and Iraqi government headquarters. A top Iraqi official said the attacks appeared to have been suicide bombings. The attack was a bold assault on the heart of the U.S.-Iraqi leadership of the country and a district seen as one of the few relatively safe refuges for Americans in the capital.

"The Daily Show" anchor Jon Stewart shared an unsettling revelation about his job on a recent episode of Comedy Central's acclaimed news program. You see, Stewart has always jokingly implied that his audience was fond of smokin' the reefer, and the assumption was reinforced by automatic applause from the studio audience to any pot-related joke. But when Fox News icon Bill O'Reilly made a crack about the marijuana usage of Stewart's audience when he was a guest on "The O'Reilly Factor," Comedy Central wasn't laughing.

My roommate is a digi-geek

You can learn a lot about a person by noticing what they watch on television. Take my roommate for example. In my apartment, we have a digital video recorder. For those of you still under the tyranny of plain old television, DVRs, like VCRs, allow viewers to record what's on TV and watch it later. However, the various systems actually use computer hard drives to keep your favorite shows.

U.N. report criticizes Israel on human rights

JERUSALEM -- Israel is guilty of severe human rights violations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including "wanton destruction" of Palestinian homes, according to a U.N. report obtained by The Associated Press on Thursday. The 18-page report was prepared by John Dugard, the U.N. representative for human rights, and charges that while some of Israel's actions can be explained by security concerns, many cannot.

WonderLab celebrates 10 years of science

The WonderLab Museum of Science, Health and Technology will celebrate 10 years of serving the Bloomington community today through a fund-raising event, Science Night Out. The two-story, 15,000-square foot building is located in downtown Bloomington and serves as a museum and learning center to encourage people of all ages to experience science through hands-on exhibits and programs.

IU to host Mongolia Society

The U.S. Ambassador to Mongolia will be speaking at the Mongolia Society meeting today at 9 a.m. in Woodburn Hall room 101. Ambassador Pamela Slutz and Deputy Mongolian Ambassador to the U.S., Ts. Jambaldorj will be two of the dignitaries attending the conference. The State Department's new Mongolia desk officer will also be present. IU is holding the annual meeting in conjunction with the Central Eurasian Studies Society conference. Featured events will include research paper presentations, film viewings and musical performances.
