Rep. Hill defends vote to teachers

U.S. Rep. Baron Hill, D-Ind., visited the School of Education Tuesday to discuss literacy and language education in primary and secondary schools with IU faculty and local educators. At the forefront of the discussion was the controversial No Child Left Behind Act, which Hill voted for in 2001.

Wrestlers balance matches, finals week

Finals are right around the corner for IU. Pulling all-nighters and fretting about grades are two of the main concerns for students. Hoosier wrestlers do not have this luxury. Not only must they worry about finals, but keeping their focus on upcoming matches is paramount for team success. "They are putting in a lot of work academically now, but there is enough time in the day for them to both study and wrestle," IU coach Duane Goldman said. "To be honest, practice for them is a good release when they are putting in a lot of study time."

IU to battle ND after year apart

IU and Notre Dame are both looking to end two-game losing streaks tonight at the Joyce Center in South Bend. Notre Dame (2-2) was ranked the last time IU (2-3) made the trip to South Bend, and it was also IU coach Mike Davis' first season as head coach. IU was 3-3 at the time and upset the then-No. 10 Notre Dame, 86-78. IU hasn't lost to the Fighting Irish since a trip to South Bend in 1994.

Bush in opposition to Taiwan independence

WASHINGTON -- President Bush said Tuesday after meeting with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao that he opposes the apparent interest of Taiwan's leaders in taking steps toward independence. Meeting with reporters in the Oval Office after a 40-minute meeting with Wen, Bush said he had told the premier, "The United States policy is one China." "We oppose any unilateral decision by either China or Taiwan to change the status quo," Bush said, "and the comments and actions made by the leader of Taiwan indicate that he may be willing to make decisions unilaterally, to change the status quo, which we oppose."

Former Sen. Paul Simon dies after undergoing single bypass heart surgery

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Paul Simon, the bow-tie-wearing missionary's son who rose from crusading newspaper owner to U.S. senator and presidential aspirant, died Tuesday, a day after undergoing heart surgery. He was 75. Simon was surrounded by family members at St. John's Hospital in Springfield when he died, according to a statement from Southern Illinois University, where Simon started a public policy institute after his retirement.

Red Square bomber kills 5

MOSCOW -- A suicide bomber who may have intended to attack Russia's parliament blew herself up outside a nearby upscale hotel across from Red Square on Tuesday, killing five people and sparking fears of a new wave of terror attacks in the Russian capital. The bombing, which also wounded at least 12 people, came on the heels of Sunday's nationwide elections for parliament's lower house and only days after a woman blew herself up on a train in southern Russia, killing 44 people.

Gore endorses Dean for Democratic nomination

NEW YORK -- Former Vice President Al Gore endorsed Howard Dean for the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, adding momentum and political prestige to Dean's front-running campaign. Gore said Dean "really is the only candidate who has been able to inspire at the grass-roots level all over the country." He said the former Vermont governor also was the only Democratic candidate who made the correct judgment about the Iraq war.

Student brings Nintendo games online

Nintendo GameCube-owning students who receive "Mario Kart: Double Dash!!" for the holidays will be able to play it online thanks to IU junior Chad Paulson. Paulson is the owner and founder of Warp Pipe, a project that allows LAN-enabled GameCube games to be played online.

'Chimes' concert features Singing Hoosiers

Spring course takes students into California wilderness

The daunting gray walls and brownish desks of typical classrooms can get old fast. But next semester, some students will be in classes surrounded by emerald green trees and crystal-like snow-topped mountain crests. They will hike through craters formed by volcanic eruption, ski down California's Mammoth Mountain and observe 5,000-year-old bristlecone pines with the U.S Forest Service.

Stocks push higher on investor optimism

McDonald's posts strong U.S. sales

Indiana steel in better position now
