After collecting years of unscientific anecdotal evidence, I have come to this conclusion: it is far too easy to obtain a motor vehicle operators license in this country. One would think a sleepy college hamlet would be immune from the wild-eyed maneuvering of Manhattan, N.Y., Chicago, Los Angeles or Atlanta. Nay -- bad driving is an epidemic spreading from all corners of the country to plague our pavement.

The smack of a caught football, the crackle of the grill, the hiss of a freshly tapped keg -- ahh, the sounds of spring. Sure it's only a simulation of spring, seeing as it's still officially winter, but after five days of warm weather, it sure is a fine pseudo-spring. Saturday, as temperatures neared 60, layers of clothing were shed, flip-flops were donned and impromptu cookouts popped up across campus.

But if you leave the door to your house unlocked, are you to blame if a thief walks in and takes your television? Monday, the case of Indiana University v. the Emergency Web site "hacker" was heard by a campus judicial board.

Hoosiers face Marion at home

The IU baseball team did not play it's scheduled game yesterday against Taylor University due to the weather. The cancellation was due to the wet field, which was ruled incapable of hosting play.

A lesson from the Turtles

Did you ever wonder how the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles grew so huge and muscular in such a short time? Of course not. Why? Because they continually aired the episode of the green ooze leaking in the sewer and making gigantic life-size turtles out of them. They quickly proved any existing allegations wrong -- like perhaps steroids, all fans like myself could watch without wonder.

Runners shine as IU places 6th at Big Tens

This past weekend, the men's track team took on its conference rivals in the Big Ten Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan, finishing sixth as a team with 58 points, four points out of fourth place.

IU second home for 2 Czech tennis players

Oftentimes, teams boast players from the same state, maybe even the same city, but not usually the same foreign country. The Hoosiers do that in claiming two players from the Czech Republic with freshman David Bubenicek and junior Jakub Praibis. Bubenicek, a native of Kromeriz, Czech Republic, was mainly drawn to IU for the opportunity to play tennis at a Big Ten school. The education that IU offers was also a factor, as there are many quality programs here that helped persuade Bubenicek in becoming a Hoosier. Though his time on the court has been limited due to injury, he made the most of his only singles appearance of the season in a key victory against Middle Tennessee State Jan. 24, which helped the Hoosiers to a 4-3 victory.

Rebels, U.S. marines enter Haitian capital

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- Rebels rolled into the Haitian capital Monday and were met by hundreds of residents dancing in the streets and cheering the ouster of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The United States denied allegations Aristide was kidnapped by U.S. forces eager for him to resign and be spirited into exile.

IU's CAVE offers virtual reality

Calming Oriental music played in the background as senior Jackie Nykiel moved past the large golden Buddha statues and through the ancient Buddhist temple. Suddenly, Nykiel leapt high into the air, towering above the temple and the lake surrounding it. This is not a distorted "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" reality. For Nykiel and senior Lisa Reinwald, this is virtual reality.

Students sing with soul in IU choirs

Students who loved to sing before college need not give up their passions for vocal performance. IU's choral department offers a variety of opportunities for both music and non-music majors to display their talents. The choral department allows students from all majors to participate in its auditions each semester.

RHA tickets debate campaign issues

State gives emergency funds

Police, firefighters, medical technicians and other emergency first responders in 45 counties throughout Indiana will receive a financial boost from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Gov. Joe Kernan announced Tuesday. Seven million dollars will be dispersed throughout Indiana to improve a statewide communications system network currently funded by the Integrated Public Safety Commission's Project Hoosier Safe-T.

Home finale heartbreak

It was like David and Goliath, the 4-12 Hoosiers going up against the No. 22 Michigan State Spartans. Facing a 51-48 deficit, IU sophomore Cyndi Valentin's last-second, running three-pointer shot into the air like the aforementioned rock and struck its mark -- only this time, Goliath got up. After hitting the three pointer at the final second to force the game into overtime, the Spartans won, 60-51. The Hoosiers fought the Spartans doggedly in the second half, never trailing by more than four points in the period and even taking the lead for five minutes. Following a lay-up by MSU junior Kelly Roehrig with nine seconds left in the game, IU was facing a three-point deficit until Valentin connected on a deep three pointer with no time left on the clock.

Conference debunks Israeli myths

Students from throughout the Midwest attended a summit in Chicago Sunday in an effort to highlight pro-Israeli issues. Hoosiers for Israel sent 20 students to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee event held in the Hyatt Regency Hotel at the O'Hare International Airport.
