Russia investigates possibility of terrorism in plane crashes

BUCHALKI, Russia -- Russian emergency workers searched heaps of twisted metal and tall grass Wednesday for clues about what caused two airliners to plunge to earth within minutes of each other, killing all 89 people aboard. Officials said one jet sent a hijack distress signal. Flight recorders from both planes were found and taken to Moscow for investigation, ITAR-TASS, a Russian news agency, reported, indicating the question of what caused the twin disasters soon could be answered.

Surveys: Life changing for IU students

If The Princeton Review is to be believed, the party at IU is beginning to die. IU fell to the No. 15 party school in the nation according to the publication's 2005 list of "The Best 357 Colleges," but did manage to land the No. 5 spot in the "Lots of Beer" ranking. IU received what administrators saw as negative national attention when the school was ranked the top party school in the country in 2002. In 2003, The Princeton Review ranked IU No. 3 for parties.

IU employee booked for drugs

An IU employee was arrested in July by the Indiana State Police Methamphetamine Abuse Task Force on three felony drug charges at his Bloomington home, according to a statement Indiana State Police Trooper Jon Patrick gave in a Monroe County Court affidavit. 'U.S. News & World Report' ranks Kelley School, freshman programs favorably

In its annual ranking of the nation's top colleges and universities, U.S. News & World Report recognized the IU Kelley School of Business and many of its specialty programs among the best undergraduate programs in the nation. Among public and private undergraduate schools of business, the Kelley School was tied with the University of Illinois for 11th in the nation. Only the University of Michigan's undergraduate business program ranked higher than IU among Big Ten schools.

National test average increases

High school students did better on the ACT in 2004 than they did in the previous year, raising the national average by one-tenth of a point to 20.9 out of 36, according to a recent study by ACT Inc., the group that administers the test.

Committee narrows AD search to short list

After more than a month of interviews, the Athletics Director Search Committee has narrowed its pool of 100 candidates to three to five, IU Alumni Association President Ken Beckley said. The 16-member committee received a total of 100 applicants by the July 16 deadline, with the goal of having the finalist pool reduced to, at most, six to eight by mid-August to present to IU President Adam Herbert.

Former Cowboy Carter 'Jets' to New York

Quincy Carter ended up replacing the quarterback who took his spot in Dallas. In an odd switch, the quarterback cut by the Cowboys signed with the New York Jets on Tuesday and will back up Chad Pennington. Pennington's backup last season was 40-year-old Vinny Testaverde, who was released by the Jets in June and became the Cowboys' starter when Carter was let go.

Hayes wins 100 hurdles as favorite Felicien falls early

ATHENS, Greece -- Joanna Hayes screamed as she crossed the finish line of the 100-meter hurdles in Olympic-record time. About 90 meters behind her, world champion Perdita Felicien lay flat on the ground, crying in disbelief. Felicien stepped on the first hurdle, tumbling to the ground and taking Irina Shevchenko of Russia with her. All Felicien could do was watch Hayes win in 12.37 seconds, breaking the Olympic record of 12.38 set by Bulgaria's Yordanka Donkova 16 years ago. After the race, Felicien still couldn't believe what happened.

Mavericks and Warriors complete 8-player trade

DALLAS -- The Dallas Mavericks got a big man Tuesday, completing an eight-player deal that will bring Erick Dampier from the Golden State Warriors. Dallas sent Christian Laettner, Eduardo Najera, two future first-round draft picks and the draft rights to guards Luis Flores and Mladen Sekularac to the Warriors for Dampier, Dan Dickau, Evan Eschmeyer and the draft rights to Steve Logan.
