The Department of Education Office for Civil Rights opened an investigation into IU on Feb. 5 in response to a Title VI complaint received Dec. 14. Zachary Marschall, editor in chief of Campus Reform, a national conservative media organization, alleges in the complaint that IU failed to adequately respond to antisemitism on campus.

“Samia Halaby Uncanceled,” an event showcasing videos of Palestinian painter Samia Halaby’s art and life, will take place 7 p.m. Feb. 17 in the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. Sponsored by the IU Bloomington chapter of the American Association of University Professors and private donors, the event will be free but require a ticket.

IU cancelled Palestinian abstract painter Samia Halaby’s exhibition, which had been planned for three years, according to a two-sentence letter to the artist Dec. 20. After unsuccessful appeals to the IU administration, Madison Gordon, Halaby’s grandniece who works with Halaby’s studio, started a petition urging the university to reinstate the exhibition, which has garnered 9,360 signatures as of Friday evening.

Indiana University administration temporarily suspended tenured IU political science professor Abdulkader Sinno following IU's denial of a room reservation for an event hosted by the Palestine Solidarity Committee while Sinno was the group's advisor. The decision has prompted pushback from faculty, with 14 current and former faculty authoring a petition in defense of Sinno and free speech on campus.

In the wake of more than a month of tension on campus, a group of roughly 75 people filled the rows of Woodburn 120 on Thursday evening to hear an Israeli-American speaker discuss the evolution of his perspective on Israel and Palestine. A Jewish student asked how to talk to her family about her pro-Palestine views. A man who grew up in Algeria under France’s colonial rule spoke of the connection he felt with Palestinians. A Palestinian-American rested his head on his hand, his wrist encircled with beaded bracelets in the colors of the Palestinian flag.

Bloomington voters took to the polls today to vote on a school funding referendum as well as races for mayor, city clerk and city council. Though the referendum and the District 3 city council race were the only contested items on the ballot, 10,441 voters cast their ballots in this election.

Election Day is Tuesday, meaning voters will get to vote for the city council, city clerk, mayor and a referendum on tax increases for local public schools.
