It is all too common these days to see celebrity feuds, and women are often at the center of them. The impossible standards women hold for other women are a product of the patriarchy— and this is especially apparent in the parasocial relationships many TikTok users have with public figures.

One of the more alarming things I have recently noticed on TikTok has been the misinformation and fear mongering surrounding birth control pills. Creators are claiming that hormonal birth control pills cause cancer and infertility, and many push the “fertility awareness” method as an alternative. The timing of this influx of content is concerning given that access to abortion is now considered restrictive in over half of U.S. states — including Indiana — according to Guttmacher Institute.

As a college student whose weeks can get busy and consuming, there is nothing quite like a slow-paced weekend brunch to satisfy my need for delicious food and quality time with friends. I can’t think of a better way to spend a late morning than poring over the week’s events and drama over steaming coffee and a medley of my favorite breakfast foods.

As I have mentioned in a previous column, I grew up a dedicated picky eater. So much so that I did not like any condiments. When I saw the word “sauce” on a menu I would instantly tense up, wondering what sorts of mysterious and unfamiliar ingredients might be contained inside. I always ordered my food sans sauce, so it’s safe to say my childhood was full of dry sandwiches, burgers and chicken nuggets.

Nothing will make me scroll to the next video faster than when I see a TikTok creator pull out a frother to start making a drink with Bloom Greens & Superfoods powder. My “For You” page also feeds me copious videos of people displaying their supplement routine featuring various different pills and powders. Further, I find myself unable to escape the vague term “gut health” being thrown around with people claiming I need to try a revolutionary probiotic pill or digestive enzymes.

Last week, I wrote an opinion piece in which I mentioned the importance of third places. Third places — a term coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg — are physical spaces and communities besides your home or your workplace in which you can relax, do work and socialize in. While we have the lovely Herman B. Wells Library right here on campus, I was curious to explore another third place option just down Kirkwood Ave. — the Monroe County Public Library.

Perhaps you’ve seen the drink on TikTok or heard about it from a friend claiming they can’t get enough. Olipop — a brand of sparkling tonics — seems to have exploded in popularity in the last couple of years since its launch in 2018.

In high school, I was suffocated by my activities and commitments. There were days when I would leave the house at 4:30 a.m. for swim practice and wouldn’t be home until 9:30 p.m. after working on the school newspaper. I had little free time, and when I did, I was often too exhausted to spend it with peace or intention.

When I was 8 years old, I would wake up for swim meets before the sun had come up, groggy and anxious. My mom would already be downstairs, cooking me a breakfast sandwich; though I would be lucky to get even half of it into my stomach due to my pre-race nerves. The bread was always toasted exactly to my liking and the egg would be steaming and salty with melted butter. Her sandwiches cannot be replicated.

On multiple social media platforms, especially TikTok, I’ve noticed a popular trend of “protecting your peace.” While the phrase basically means practicing healthy habits and not engaging with people who bring down your energy, I find the way the trend has manifested, especially given the context of our capitalistic society, to be too extreme.

Last semester was my first one at IU and first time living over 600 miles away from home. Like many other freshmen, I had trouble adjusting. I no longer had my own room, I was showering next to hairballs and the people I had relied on for years were nowhere to be found in the vicinity of southern Indiana.
