Monroe County will have 28 polling places open Tuesday. Unlike during early voting, where all voters had to go to Election Central to vote, Monroe County voters must go to their assigned polling place on Election Day.

No Space For Hate, a local group working to fight white supremacy, released a report in July about white supremacist recruitment at IU. The report found incidents of racism and white supremacy have rapidly increased on campus since 2017. NSFH predicts racist violence will continue to escalate unless it is aggressively, proactively and institutionally combatted.

We face problems that require ingenuity and political courage, but elections encourage just one type of person to run: performers.

Recent years have seen many protests, from the Women’s March to climate marches. Most recently, in response to many high-profile police killings, a student-led Black Lives Matter protest in Bloomington drew thousands. Other actions followed. In short, IU student activism is nothing new.

In recent weeks, at least 100 law enforcement agencies around the U.S. deployed tear gas to disperse largely peaceful protests against police brutality, which occurred in the wake of many high-profile police killings of Black Americans. One such agency was the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana is suing Indianapolis for IMPD’s use of tear gas, specifically regarding May 29 - 31.

You’ve probably seen some variation of the “unfollow me if you don’t support Black Lives Matter” post on social media in recent weeks, almost always posted by a white person, at least in my feed. While I understand the urge to cut people out of your virtual or real life if they do not understand Black Lives Matter, this attitude doesn’t help anybody.

As a senior in high school when the Parkland shooting happened, I was one of the leading members of my high school’s March for Our Lives walkout and trip to Washington, D.C., for the rally. I strongly support common sense gun control legislation and am at least a little scared of guns.

President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he wants to designate antifa a terrorist organization. Antifa, short for antifascist, has no defined structure, no leadership. It also has killed exactly zero people and does not advocate a worldview that is in itself violent, both of which are usually defining characteristics of a terrorist group.

One of the many parts of American life upended by the COVID-19 pandemic is meat consumption. Large meat-packing facilities are the perfect locations for disease to spread. While some consumers are stocking up on meat amid fears of a shortage, others who face financial hardship or prefer less perishable options have been purchasing less meat and transitioning to meatless or lighter meat diets.

Wednesday is the 50th annual Earth Day, which has become the largest secular observance in the world. The Earth Day Network is the world’s largest, broadest environmental coalition, and its goals range from climate change mitigation and voter turnout to conservation and education efforts.
