WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — There’s a well-established formula for IU’s success. Get the ball down low to freshman forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, and clear space for him to drive to the rim. It’s a simple concept that has been effective all season, and one the Hoosiers had seemingly mastered of late, winning three of their last four games before Purdue.

At times in IU’s 68-60 victory over No. 9 Penn State the team looked like a possible contender for the Big Ten Tournament title. It may be weird to think that just two games after being embarrassed by Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the Hoosiers have seemingly figured out how to win.

After beating Minnesota 68-56 on Thursday in Minneapolis, IU brought its record to 17-9. For the fourth time this season, I’ve thought the team looked deserving of an NCAA Tournament appearance. Every other time I was confident that the team had finally turned a corner and figured out its version of winning basketball. Each time I was wrong.

ANN ARBOR, Mich — IU head coach Archie Miller stood at the end of the bench with his palms to the sky as Michigan junior forward Isaiah Livers laid in an uncontested layup. Livers had just run the same play on the last possession, using a ball screen IU junior forward Joey Brunk overcommitted against and blew by the defense for the score.

Iowa head coach Francis McCaffery slammed the scorer’s table in frustration as his son, sophomore guard Connor McCaffery, launched a fadeaway 3-pointer that fell short of the basket as the shot clock expired. On the far end of the sideline, IU head coach Archie Miller could barely contain his excitement and yelled for his team to quickly transition into offense.

IU men's basketball is in a three-game losing streak. It's a streak that began with a collapse against Maryland on Jan. 26 followed by two poor performances on offense. IU scored its lowest point total of the season against Penn State on Wednesday. Against Ohio State on Saturday, IU struggled with its rebounding and frontcourt play, two areas that have been strengths all season.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Only 10 minutes had passed since the tipoff and the Hoosiers appeared to have all but accepted their inevitable 68-59 defeat to Ohio State.

After the toughest week of the season for IU basketball, the Indiana Daily Student's men's basketball beat reporters are back in the studio to analyze the Michigan State and Maryland games. But the focus of this week was the NCAA Tournament, and just how safely or not IU is in the field of 64.

On the surface, IU’s 77-76 loss to No. 17 Maryland looked like a wasted opportunity to beat two top-20 teams in four days.

Before the opening tip Thursday, I sat in the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall media room debating with other reporters about how many games IU needed to win to earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament. After a short discussion, the consensus was that six wins would get the Hoosiers back into the tournament for the first time since 2016.
