The coronavirus pandemic made the school year difficult for most students, but presented distinct challenges for those in the Jacobs School of Music. Core parts of their studies — performance and composition — became nearly impossible to do safely or collaboratively.

The IU New Music Ensemble, directed by David Dzubay, will livestream its final performance at 8 p.m. May 6 via IUMusicLive!. The performance was recorded in March. Another performance recorded on the same day will be livestreamed April 29.

The Jewish Theatre of Bloomington will present a virtual showing of “A Pickle” at 7:30 p.m. May 20 and 22 and at 7 p.m. May 23 on Zoom. The play is a one-woman show about Doris Rubenstein, played by Annabel Armour, who entered her famous kosher dill pickle recipe into a pickle-making contest at the Minnesota State Fair only to be rejected two years in a row. The show will be livestreamed with Armour acting live in her Chicago home.

IU dance group Paso a Paso will present its 4th annual Latinxpo at 4 p.m. Sunday, giving an opportunity for Latinx students to share art inspired by their culture. The performance will be at the Open Air Venue at Kinsley Hollow and will also be livestreamed on Zoom.

The IU African American Dance Company will perform its 47th annual spring concert from the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The virtual performance will be livestreamed on Zoom. Tickets are available for purchase to watch the livestream on a sliding scale of donations from $5 to $30.

The Grunwald Gallery will show a BFA thesis exhibition from April 28 until May 8. The exhibition will feature works from 17 graduating students in the bachelor of fine arts program.

The Buskirk-Chumley Theater is presenting the Battle of the Bands competition with performances beginning May 14. The event is open to anyone in the Bloomington community in a non-professional band not signed to a record label. The competition will be split into three rounds. Interested participants can apply on the Buskirk-Chumley website until April 16.

The class project, “Silver Lining,” was one of the first reintroductions of IU theater students to the physical stage this year. The production took place Friday and was composed of five short musical numbers: “Revenge Party,” “Mein Herr,” “Mama Who Bore Me,” “Another Day of Sun,” and “Money.”

The Grunwald Art Gallery is presenting thesis exhibitions from 7 of out of the 13 students in their last year of the master of fine arts program from April 12-23. The former six artist’s work were showcased March 22 to April 2.

Bloomington-based musical group the Forgotten Clefs performed a musical storytelling event Tuesday featuring the children’s storybook “The Very Last Castle.” The pre-recorded performance was streamed by the Monroe County Public Library at 4:30 p.m., followed by a live Q&A session with members of the ensemble.

The Stone Age Institute is presenting “Popular Culture,” a six-part virtual series of musical and dance performances every Sunday until May 2. The institute, which focuses on exploring human origins, began livestreaming the series March 28 and will continue to air for the next month at 8 p.m. Sundays.

Lynnli Wang, a graduate student in organ performance, performs the carillon at noon every Saturday for “Meet Me at the Metz,” sponsored by the Jacobs School of Music Organ Department. A daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, Wang decided to dedicate the March 27 recital to the #stopasianhate movement.

As Women’s History Month ends, the conversation around women’s experiences and need for support continues. IU student leaders in Women and Co. and Women in Media believe in the importance of using women-focused groups to do this, they said.

Ladies’ Night Comedy is a female-focused sketch and stand-up comedy group composed of eight members. It focuses mainly on writing and performing stand-up routines.

The “Swing into Spring Cabaret” is the second of Cardinal Stage’s three-part cabaret series. Featuring solo and ensemble performances of swing and big band jazz tunes, the cabaret will be livestreamed on Crowdcast 7 p.m. March 26 and 27.

Four days into Women’s History Month, freshman Erik Wakar’s involvement in the IU music community is growing, along with the pressure to come out as trans and present more feminine, she said. Wakar, who identifies as trans and genderqueer and primarily uses she/her pronouns, is met with the difficulty of not knowing trans musicians and overcoming the gender dividing expectations for performers.

Eating inside a restaurant has given some concerned with contracting COVID-19 anxiety about their health and safety. A few members of the community have said their anxiety has been heightened with the increased promotion of dining-in for the two-week Devour Bloomington event.

With a diverse food scene, Bloomington offers a staggering number of cuisine options. Restaurateurs and vendors in town infuse distinct cultural backgrounds into their foods. Michael Edwards and Iuri Santos are three examples of this fusion. Some of those backgrounds provide Bloomington with popcorn, tea and popsicles.

Cambridge, Massachusetts, native Kira Domonique fills several roles in the Bloomington community. She is the first Black woman to own a therapeutic horsemanship foundation, CET Posse, in the state of Indiana. She also owns her own production company, Kira D. Productions LLC., and works as an independent spiritual advisor.

According to the University Institutional Research and Reporting, only 7.5% of degree seeking students at IU Bloomington identify as Black/African American. In response there are several IU-sponsored Black-focused spaces within the Neal-Marshall Culture Center, the African American Arts Institute, the department of African American and African Diaspora Studies, and student-led organizations that focus on specific topics related to the Black community. These groups can be found on the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center’s website and BeInvolved.
