‘Broad City’
Tim Wise’s lecture at the Indiana Memorial Union on Wednesday got me thinking about ways to discuss issues of racial inequality. I’ve been sitting on this great example of how privilege operates.
Union Board’s screening of “Dear White People” made me aware of how race influences even the mundane practice of calculating a tip. The film by Justin Simien addressed many aspects of the marginalization that affect black college students in this country.
It is true that many of the acceptance speeches during the Oscars on Sunday had more urgency to them than previous years, ranging from J.K. Simmons telling the audience to call their parents and John Legend demanding the U.S. alter its justice system that has “more black men under correctional control today than were under slavery ?in 1850.”
Indiana is among the 10 states making ostensible efforts to permit firearms at universities. The belief is if guns could be freely carried on college campuses, then women would be protected against rape.
“Saturday Night Live” didn’t pull any punches during its 40th anniversary special.
Increased visibility is one of the best ways to improve a social issue.

I’m not the first to say it, but I’m still going to dedicate some of my precious word count to make a point. We live in a time when technology is drastically changing our social landscape.
