If there is one thing I have experienced during my time at IU, it’s the fear that I am not as qualified as my peers. That’s not to say IU’s environment is the culprit, but I can’t help but wonder why I have felt as if everything I do, educationally and otherwise, seems to be a competition.

Dorm living is a rite of passage for college students. For many, the entire experience is a host of unknowns: sharing a room (often for the first time), living in a much smaller space than usual and sharing common spaces with strangers. When I began college, I was worried about this huge transition— what if I needed alone time? But I have found dorm living is, in fact, wonderful.

At age 17, my part-time job in a local restaurant had become a sanctum. I clocked in looking forward to contently hustling alongside a hodgepodge, yet inextricably tight band of coworkers, and making light conversation about endless topics with a never-ending stream of customers. I was energized by the delicious aroma of food and pastry, always plotting the best time to slip into the kitchen and chat up the staff for my free meal. It was a thing of beauty, to watch a strip plaza hole-in-the-wall restaurant unite people of all kinds in a dinner rush.

Throughout my 20 years of life, I have constantly heard how important it is to meditate and journal. Doctors, therapists, friends and family have always informed me how beneficial both actions are for one’s mental health, including being able to mitigate stress and provide a sense of calmness. I dabbled in meditation and journaling, but I never devoted a ton of time to it. Instagram reels, emails, schoolwork, and my social life always seemed more important to me.

We can’t seem to buy a hint of decent weather. For the past three weeks, it’s been snowing, raining, freezing or something in between. Winter is now in full effect, and I’m not here for it. So, I’ve implemented a new tactic to get over the winter blues: planning vacations.

While chess has been played worldwide since its invention in India in the 6th century, it has recently experienced a massive surge in popularity. The new interest is partly due to the success of the 2020 TV show “The Queen’s Gambit. This, along with other factors like finding activities to do during the pandemic, easy access to online games, and a rise in short-form video content, has accelerated its growth. This is a positive development because chess is more than just a fun game – it brings people together and creates a space for conversation and understanding.

Atop a large metal freezer on four wheels sit two small plastic boxes: a red one for napkins and a green one labeled “tips.” Each box shares the same logo: “RASTA POPS,” in bold black lettering, and below it in smaller white lettering, “Brazilian Fusion Ice Pops.” A symbolic Black pride power fist holding a popsicle separates “Rasta” from “Pops”

While college is the time to find new friends and go out whenever you please, sometimes you may feel like you just need a break. It can be hard to get a minute to yourself. Not everyone likes to be alone, but I think everyone needs to prioritize checking in on themselves every once in a while. Here are four of my favorite ways to spend quality time with myself:

When I started as a freshman at Indiana University this semester, I knew I wanted to join IU’s Ultimate Frisbee team, the HoosierMama?s. I began practicing with the team within a few weeks and knew immediately I had found the right fit for me. These past months on the team have been beneficial for my mental health and made me a more confident athlete. I also gained a tight group of great friends right away. Joining intramural sports is one of the best ways to find a community on campus.

“The Marvels” is a good movie, y’all. I’m tired of the hate, of reading rants on social media about how terrible it is and watching videos about how Disney’s “wokeness” — that is, having female leads — has bitten it in the butt. These sexist videos are incomprehensible to me. How is making a movie about women a problem?

With only a few weeks left in the semester, I’ve been spending a lot of time reflecting on my first semester here at IU. With that, I’ve also been looking back at my first impressions and introduction to college life, the feelings and fears I had at the beginning of this new adventure. Looking back, I especially remember my dissatisfaction with New Student Orientation (NSO). The discouragement I felt leaving that program was not an accurate harbinger of the days to come at college.
