The sound of ceramic coffee mugs rattling and an espresso machine whistling fills the air. The pour of liquid can be heard filling to-go cups, grabbed by patrons shuffling in and out as quickly as possible, based on the sounds of the door. Some people slurp their coffee, while others share laughs.

Soo Sup Cha has been teaching how to read “ing” sounds to his screen of first grade students. He reads to a gallery of faces on Zoom, and to the quiet, still rows of empty desks and empty chairs in front of him. In their own Zoom windows, his students all write down the letters on their paper — or likely their iPads — and Soo Sup asks them each to read what they wrote. The microphones all turn on.

The COVID-19 pandemic shifted learning online for students across the world. A year later, as universities like IU announce in-person class plans for the fall 2021 semester, educators are exploring the idea of including aspects of remote learning — such as hybrid models and more online course offerings — in education even after the pandemic ends.

IU Student Government has a history spanning over 100 years here at IU. Historically, IUSG has been an organization largely run by white male students. However, this year it is the most diverse it has ever been. IUSG currently has a Jewish and female student body president and a Muslim vice president.

IU announced classes would move online for two weeks after spring break on March 10, 2020. It was the start of a pandemic that would reshape lives and what it meant to be a student. When COVID-19 procedures lead to hybrid in-person and virtual learning for the fall 2020 and spring 2021 semesters, students faced new rules and safety protocol, disrupting many parts of the traditional college experience.

The mental toll of existing in a world of constant grief, loss, change and sacrifice is difficult to overstate.
