As the winter months roll in, bringing along darker days, colder air and generally lower spirits, I am feeling especially inspired by the Danish concept of hygge and how we can practice it to soften winter’s harshness and even learn to enjoy the cold. I am no expert on the language and culture, but from reading about the phrase, it seems to describe an intentional focus on taking life slow, appreciating small things, spending quality time with loved ones and prioritizing warmth and coziness.

One of my favorite things to do during the year is walk through the foliage. All the red and orange and yellow leaves are a welcome change after months of hot, humid weather and plain, green leaves. But the fall leaves save us; they encourage us to go out and enjoy being in nature with a different backdrop.

NYC Comedian Ben Wasserman brought vulnerability and laughter to Bloomington’s Allen Funeral Home and Crematory on Oct. 24. During one of the last shows on his independent, cross-country “Live After Death” tour, he hugged an audience member for the first time and taught a retired director of chaplaincy how to employ comedy as a grieving mechanism.

Last May, Former IU student Nick Willham founded the company Farmogic to make local produce and grass-fed meat easily accessible. He gathered his closest friends to share the impacts of grass-fed farms by delivering the most nutrient dense food right to people’s doorstep.

Every homecoming, the IU Student Alumni Association crowns two members of the undergraduate student body Homecoming Royalty, awarding each winner with a $500 scholarship. Any undergraduate student can apply, and 12 are selected to be on the homecoming court. IU students can vote for members of homecoming royalty using the IU Mobile app. Throughout homecoming, these students will participate in volunteer activities, ride a float in the homecoming parade and take the field during the football game.

When Aaliyah Raji and Marsha Koda were inaugurated as IU student body president and vice president in April 2023, they became the first Black women to serve in their positions since IU’s first student council was appointed in 1912. Leyla Fern King, who was elected as chief justice of IU student government supreme court in August, also became the first known Black woman to serve as chief justice due to gaps in the records of the IU supreme court. This is the first time in IU’s history that the student body president, vice president and chief justice have been Black women.

Walking is something college students do every day, whether walking to class, going out to eat with friends or heading to an IU game. It is what gets us from point A to point B. And now that fall finally seems to be arriving in Bloomington, it is the perfect time to enjoy a walk. The leaves are changing, the squirrels are out digging in the dirt and it is no longer scorching hot every day. But walking is more than just a way to get around –– it can boost your mood, improve your health and spark creativity.

In the flashing red and blue light of police cars, students in support of Israel and students in support of Palestine faced off at Sample Gates on Monday night, separated by a line of police officers. For 20 minutes, both groups waved their flags, chanted and yelled at each other — the tense culmination of a night that began with two peaceful gatherings.
