In his Feb. 9 column, “What has impeachment achieved?”, columnist Brett Abbott asks captivating questions about Congressional Democrats’ attempt to remove President Trump from office. Following his acquittal, it is fair to ask why would Democrats even attempt to impeach Trump when removal would be futile?

Jaclyn Ferguson would have us believe Google is hypocritical in simultaneously promoting Black History Month while not hiring enough black employees (Google’s Black History Month advertising is hypocritical, IDS Opinions, February 6). It would appear that Ms. Ferguson is comparing apples and oranges in her argument.

Not every day do Americans check their phones with notifications of a final impeachment vote on a modern American president, but then not every day does a sitting U.S. Senator vote to remove a president of his or her own party either. Until yesterday.

In 1988, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the First Amendment rights of student journalists are not violated when school officials prohibit the publication of articles in a school newspaper. In the Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier decision, the courts ruled in favor of censorship.

Is IU’s bicentennial history being whitewashed? That question became relevant as video and stills from the university’s Moving Images Archive streamed on giant screens overhead at Assembly Hall. The video was the opening for a stirring speech by actor Viola Davis in a combined Bicentennial/Martin Luther King, Jr event that attracted 8,000 people.

The following poem was shared by Provost Lauren Robel in celebration of the IU Bicentennial. The poem, which she wrote, was originally recited at the 200 Festival Bicentennial Ceremony on Sept. 27, 2019.

In just a few days, those of us at Indiana University — and our many friends around the state, nation and world — will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the university’s founding on Jan. 20, 1820.

Let me understand this right: the university is up in arms not because Professor Eric Rasmussen published something “offensive,” but because he had the audacity to retweet — outside of the classroom no less — an article someone else wrote, a provocative article that may have even contained some accurate "facts," just not facts people necessarily like.

The recent statement IU Provost, Lauren Robel released and essentially parroted by the IU and Kelley Student Governments’ joint statement concerning a bigoted, yet still gainfully employed faculty member are disappointing and harmful. All ideas aren’t equal and meriting a platform. Someone advocating for a flat Earth shouldn’t occupy a space in respectable society, and certainly not academia. The bigotry espoused by a Kelley faculty member is no less absurd and shouldn’t be provided a platform. Tolerating intolerance is not allowing a, “diverse environment”, but a haven for the privileged to espouse their bigotry immune from substantial reproach. Allowing this conduct to proceed is detrimental to the school and our community. Empty platitudes won't repair such harm.

In an Aug. 27 article from the IDS titled IUPD Receives Reports of White Supremacist Flyers, it was reported that IU Police Department chief Jill Lees told the IDS there was no reason to take any extra precautions at this time because they did not know the intentions of the flyers.

On Wednesday, the Indiana Daily Student published a letter to the editor that made several false assertions about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The letter was responding to two recent columns by Bryce Greene that made astute criticisms of South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The IDS published two op-eds by Bryce Greene in relation to Mayor Buttigieg’s stance on Israel. Instead of blaming Israel for the plight of Palestinians, the blame should be placed on the U.S. State Department-designated terror organization Hamas.

The e-scooters around Bloomington have been a point of contention since they were first brought here. I have seen many pictures, videos and news stories about people being injured while riding scooters around Bloomington. Other schools have banned them from their campuses because of the problems they cause.

IUSF’s actions are turning the unique and amazing experience of Little 500, cited by many as the high point of their college years, into a bad memory to be actively forgotten for at least several individuals involved here.

This Little 500 season will be no different from that of past years. Not only will fans be greeted with drinking specials but officers brought in to directly combat their consumption.

It’s the time of year Hoosiers get wildly excited for: Little 500. People come from all over to cheer and watch bikes zoom by in Bill Armstrong Stadium.

I am a student in P155: Public Oral Communication. Monday’s article "Students, faculty divided over COAS speech class" provided a good overview of the situation, but I wanted to respond to what Professor Arthos said.
