____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>IU’s offense has been nearly unstoppable, the team scoring at least 10 goals in all six games played this year. “Our team is playing very well together and the chemistry is evident in some of the plays we executed this weekend,” junior utility player Rebecca Gerrity said. The No. 13 Hoosiers returned home to Bloomington with a 6-0 record after four wins in Providence, R.I.It is the best start to an IU season since 1998, when the team won five of their opening six games.IU took on Brown first and won easily, 17-6. The Hoosiers never looked back after senior attacker Shae Fournier scored a goal on IU’s first possession. At halftime, IU led 10-2.Brown committed three turnovers to start the third quarter as each possession ended in a steal by junior attacker Colleen McNaught. She ended the match with five assists, which was tied for the IU record. This is the second time McNaught has recorded five assists in a game, the first being a 2012 game against Santa Clara.Sophomore center Candyce Schroder finished the match with a career-high four goals, an assist and a steal, making this the second time in three games she has scored at least three goals in a match.Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Gaudreault finished with 8 saves. The Hoosiers played No. 19 Hartwick next.IU beat their conference foe by a score of 11-5. At halftime the Hoosiers led 7-0.Once again, Fournier scored first for the Hoosiers. She finished with four goals in four attempted shots, while adding four steals.McNaught recorded her 100th assist for the Hoosiers. Gaudreault finished with 13 saves which ties her career high she set last year against Long Beach State.“Tomorrow we expect to come out and win again and prove that we are the best team in East,” senior defender Amanda Redfern said.Wagner was the third opponent the Hoosiers faced in the Brown Invitational.IU easily took care of Wagner, overcoming a sloppy start to win 15-5.Fournier scored the Hoosiers’ first goal for the third consecutive game.IU was up 8-4 at the half after a second goal scored by Gerrity. She scored four goals, with senior attacker Allison Campbell adding three goals.Gaudreault recorded 11 saves on 23 shot attempts. Finally, the Hoosiers played No. 20 Pacific and won 15-9.Campbell made her first start of the season, replacing junior utility player Shelby Taylor. The Tigers scored first and the game remained tight, with IU leading 6-4 at halftime.Campbell scored five goals, the fifth time in her career she has done so, while Taylor scored three goals. McNaught added three assists while Gaudreault saved five Tiger shots.IU Assistant Coach Zach White said he was pleased with IU’s performance throughout the weekend and will expect more from the team going forward.“Bottom line, we had a successful weekend and won,” White said. “Good news is we still have a lot of room for improvement with this team, and that bodes well for the end of the season.”

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>IU women’s water polo (2-0) didn’t have a match last weekend but still used the week to its advantage. The time off was used to prepare for the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I.. The Hoosiers will face Brown and Hartwick on Saturday, followed by Wagner and Pacific on Sunday.“We focused this past week on tactics, in particular frontcourt and power play and getting everyone on the same page,” IU Assistant Coach Zach White said. The Hoosiers paid attention to skill work and conditioning before competing against the Iona Gaels and Michigan Wolverines.“While still maintaining that conditioning and skill work, we have been able to improve upon what we do as a team both offensively and defensively,” White said. “As a result, our team has been really able to get a feel for what each other is really capable of doing as an individual player and collectively as a team.”With no matches, the team’s focus could waver, but the Hoosiers are attempting to keep their focus. On paper, Brown is the toughest team the Hoosiers will face, but the team has a policy that the next game is always the toughest.“Hartwick is always a tough divisional opponent and has some high stakes attached to it due to it being a conference game,” White said.Saturday’s match will be an important one for both teams.White said the team must finish their possessions, as they had a lot of scoring opportunities in the Michigan game they didn’t capitalize on. In a closer game, these mistakes could have cost the team a win.Senior attacker Allison Campbell, who led the Hoosiers with five goals at the Michigan Kick-Off, said she is just happy to be playing water polo again. She transferred from the University of Maryland after the 2012 season.Campbell has played with three fellow Hoosiers on previous teams, and said everyone on this team has helped her adapt to the new team and new style of play. The two weeks in between matches are giving the Hoosiers a chance to evaluate what they need to work on and to rest for their four matches on Saturday and Sunday. Campbell said she has noticed there is something special about this team.“We’ve got a solid group of ladies that are really committed to accomplishing our goals,” Campbell said.Follow reporter Jaylen Johnson on Twitter @neylaJohnsonIDS.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>During the course of the week the IU women’s water polo team has been a loose, fun bunch during practice. But come Saturday the team will get serious as it knows the Hoosiers have two difficult opponents to face. The Hoosiers will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take part in the ninth annual Michigan Kick-Off.To start the 2014 women’s water polo season, the No. 15 Hoosiers will face the Iona Gaels. That match is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.The Gaels are returning two of their three leading scorers from last year: senior Amy Olsen, who led the team with 102 goals and 26 assists, and senior Erika Lauraitis, who accumulated 68 goals and 2 assists. Senior goalkeeper Marisa Gaynor will return as well. She recorded a 9.98 goals-against average and .495 save percentage last year.“Iona is going to be a feisty group that will keep coming at us and test us in terms of defensive organization,”IU Coach Barry King said. After the Hoosiers play the Gaels, Iona will face the No. 13 Michigan Wolverines at 12:30 p.m.Later in the day will be a clash of Big Ten programs as the Hoosiers will battle the Wolverines. This will be the first of three matches that the two teams will play against each other during the 2014 season. The Wolverines’ leading scorer from last year, Kiki Golden, graduated, so the team will be led by sophomore Presley Pender, who scored 38 goals last season. Sophomore Bryce Beckwith also scored 38 goals, but will most likely miss all of this season with an injury. There will be a new goalkeeper since four-year starter Alex Adamson graduated. The Wolverines have a choice of three goalkeepers to replace her.“Michigan will be more of an emotional contest because of the rivalry,” King said. “It’s always been a contest that’s been decided by no more than two goals.”Michigan has a record of 32-19-1 when hosting the Michigan Kick-Off. All of the Wolverines loses have come against ranked opponents, as they are 15-19 when facing ranked opponents at the tournament. To get ready for this weekend’s matches, the team has been simulating games in practice. “We’ve been doing a lot of real life action, trying to incorporate a lot of one-on-one and six-on-six,” said sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Gaudreault. The Hoosiers are expecting to see more success than last year’s team.“We only lost one person from last year, and we’ve got a whole bunch of new teammates,” said utility player Shelby Taylor. King said his team is stronger top-to-bottom than last season, which will help as the season unfolds.“We’re much deeper in terms of our rotation,” he said. “I think we have a really solid second six. I haven’t even determined what the rotations are yet.”

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>This college football and NFL season has been packed with amazing plays and improbable comebacks.A college football season to remember came to a close with a bang.Nothing less was expected. The most amazing play came in the Alabama-Auburn game Nov. 30.With the score tied at 28, Adam Griffith was asked to attempt a 57-yard field goal. Before that, Cade Foster, the other field-goal kicker, had missed three field goals for Alabama. If Foster had made any of those field goals, Alabama would’ve been heading to the SEC championship game.Griffith kicked the ball short and it was caught by Chris Davis, who was waiting in the end zone.Davis returned the missed field goal 109 yards for a touchdown with no time remaining on the clock. Now that is a way to lose a game.Alabama Coach Nick Saban didn’t really assess the pros and cons of this play. He could’ve attempted a Hail Mary pass into the end zone for a touchdown that most likely wouldn’t have been returned by an Auburn player. Saban’s team had a kicker, a holder and many big, slow players on the field who weighed more than 250 pounds. They had no chance of stopping Davis on his return.About a year ago, Davis tweeted that he needed to return the ball.I’m sure he didn’t even know he would have an effect on such an important game. One play can cost a team a game and even its season.Prior to this game, it seemed as if Alabama would go to the SEC championship game and would be favored against the opposition. If Alabama had won the SEC championship game, the team would have moved on to the BCS championship game.Instead, Auburn is going to play Florida State for the title. The NFL has also had its share of amazing comebacks and unexpected turns. The comeback team of the year appears to be the New England Patriots.Down 24-0 against the Denver Broncos at the half, the Patriots outscored the Broncos 34-7 in the second half and in overtime to pull off the improbable win.Oh, how the tables turned from the first half to the second.A team that fumbled nearly every time it possessed the ball in the first half scored four unanswered touchdowns and a field goal to take the lead in the fourth quarter.Just two days ago, the Patriots were again down 26-14 against the Browns late in the fourth quarter.Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes within the last 61 seconds to give the Patriots another comeback win.The Patriots have won three straight games after trailing by 10 or more points in the second half.According the ESPN, the odds of winning all three games is one in 18,248.The team scored five touchdowns in the final two minutes and five seconds of the Vikings-Ravens game two days ago.Marlon Brown caught the last of them with 4 seconds to go to give the Ravens the 29-26 victory. This past football season has been one for the ages. It appears to be the year of the comeback. Many fans have had heartbreak.I hope it wasn’t you.— jayljohn@indiana.eduFollow columnist Jaylen Johnson on Twitter @nelyaJohnsonIDS.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>The Indiana Pacers are off to a remarkable start. It’s shocking how well they’ve played so far this NBA season. Before Monday night’s game, the Pacers were 16-1, the best record in the NBA.That’s impressive. This has been great for the NBA, as a team is far outperforming and doing better than anyone ever expected. The Pacers are set to win 77 games and finish with a better record than the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls, a team led by Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman. The Pacers certainly aren’t the ‘96 Bulls, but those are the facts.Their only loss this season is to the Bulls, a team they had defeated earlier in the season. It would be nice to see the Miami Heat not have the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, unlike what most basketball fans expect. The Heat’s record is 14-3. They are two games behind the Pacers for the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers and Heat play for the first time this season Dec. 10 and will play again Dec. 18. They will play four times during this season.Just like the Heat, the Pacers seem to have all the pieces needed to win the NBA championship. They have their go-to scorer in Paul George, who is fourth in the NBA in scoring, averaging 23.8 points per game. He’s right up there with all the other marquee players, as he only trails Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James for the lead in points per game. The team is constructed very well. They have four complimentary players that fill out the rest of their starting line-up. Those players are power forward David West, center Roy Hibbert, shooting guard Lance Stephenson and point guard George Hill. All four of those players are averaging between 12.2 and 12.7 points per game, as each of them have stepped up in different games to help the Pacers win games. The bench is also productive as it has a capable backup point guard in C.J. Watson, two three-point threats in Orlando Johnson and Chris Copeland, and two solid back up big players in Luis Scola and Ian Mahinmi. This team seems to be set. In the Eastern Conference, only three teams have records above 0.500.The Western Conference is the exact opposite. If the playoffs started today, all eight of the teams to make it have a record above 0.500.The Pacers have manhandled most of their competition, as they’ve been winning most of their games rather easily.Expect the Pacers to run the Eastern Conference and finish with the No. 1 seed — above the Miami Heat. Hopefully, the Western Conference won’t be too big of a challenge for the Pacers, as they will be stepping up the competition. The Pacers seem to be the team that will stop the Heat from winning three NBA championships in a row.— jayljohn@indiana.edu

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>The weekly polls and standings for college football were released Sunday. There are four undefeated teams atop the Bowl Championship Series standings, the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and USA Today Coaches Poll.Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State and Baylor are those four perfect teams. While looking through the polls and standings published Nov. 10 and Nov. 17, there were some things that were confusing. The new college football playoff system, slated to debut in 2015, cannot come soon enough, as it could correct some of the ranking issues in polls. Other polls are too sensitive to things like strength of schedule and margin of victory.Only the BCS standings should be used in college football, as the other polls don’t actually mean anything in the end. College football teams are trying to be ranked 14th or higher, giving them an automatic bid to a BCS bowl game. The playoffs should consist of more than just four teams, which is how it currently stands.Sixteen teams should compete for the National Championship. This would help clear up the difference between a team ranked fourth and fifth, as those two teams might be separated by just a few points. Both teams would make it instead of just the team that is ranked fourth. If the college football playoffs don’t work, then something else needs to be put in place that can correct college football bowl season.Nov. 10’s polls and standings had Alabama and Florida State ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, atop the BCS standings, AP Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll.Ohio State was ranked third in all three polls.Baylor was ranked fourth in both the AP Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll. In the BCS standings, it was ranked fifth.Sunday’s newest polls and standings had Baylor ranked fourth in the USA Today Coaches Poll as well as in the BCS standings, where Baylor was listed behind Alabama, Florida State and Ohio State, respectively.Baylor ranked third in the AP Top 25 Poll.Notice something different?Baylor moved up one spot, as it replaced Ohio State for the third spot.Ohio State fell one spot down to fourth in the AP Top 25 Poll.Ohio State played a weak opponent in Illinois, while Baylor played a quality opponent in Texas Tech.Baylor beat Texas Tech by 29, but Ohio State defeated Illinois by 25.Florida State’s last two games are against teams with losing records.Ohio State has one game against a team with a winning record and one game against a team with a losing record.Baylor plays two of its last three games against teams with winning records.Baylor might even move up to No. 2 in the polls and replace Florida State based on opponents. The four teams atop the polls have each already beat a couple quality opponents. Is it fair that one of those teams’ schedule is back-loaded with horrible, weak teams? No, it’s not.Baylor shouldn’t have moved up to replace Ohio State in the AP Top 25 Poll.Surprisingly, for once, it wasn’t the BCS standings that made a mistake. Alabama plays Chattanooga next before it plays in its regular season finale against No. 6 Auburn.Chattanooga competes in the Football Championship Series (FCS), which is a level below the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). To appear in a bowl game, an FBS team must win at least six games against other FBS teams or five games against FBS opponents and one against an FCS school. The sixth win against the FCS school will only count toward bowl eligibility if the FCS school meets scholarship requirements. Not that Alabama needs this win.Alabama should easily handle its opponent, while Baylor might have trouble with ranked Oklahoma State. If both teams win, will Alabama and Baylor switch spots in the rankings and polls?Hopefully not.The 16-team playoff should start immediately. The AP Top 25 Poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll need to be forgotten.— jayljohn@indiana.eduFollow columnist Jaylen Johnson on Twitter @nelyaJohnsonIDS.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Within the past week, new details have surfaced about the Miami Dolphins’ Richie Incognito’s supposed bullying of offensive lineman Johnathan Martin.Incognito was suspended by the Dolphins on Nov. 4 for alleged misconduct related to the mistreatment of his teammate.A week before the suspension, Martin left the team to receive help for some emotional issues. Some wondered why he left during the middle of the season, even after starting a game this season. What actually happened to him?Incognito supposedly sent Martin racist and threatening text messages.CBSSports.com’s Jason La Canfora said he’s seen some of the text messages that Incognito sent and confirmed he used a racial slur.Incognito also sent threatening texts about how he was going to find Martin’s mother and then kill Martin. What kind of football player is this? This isn’t a role model kids should be looking up to.He shouldn’t be playing football until he does something positive.Another incident in which Incognito is believed to have affected Martin is when Martin contributed $15,000 to help finance a trip to Las Vegas. Some of the Dolphins players went there during the summer.Incognito didn’t even go on the trip. Martin didn’t really want to give up the money, but in the end he did. An unidentified source told ESPN that Martin just handed over the money, not wanting to go on the trip, as Martin was, “fearing the consequences if he did not hand over the money.”In the next few weeks we will probably learn more of Incognito’s abuses. Most people understand that younger players need to get toughened up, but this is not toughening up.This is bullying.Typically a young player will go through some sort of hazing when they first get in the NFL.Normally it only lasts during their rookie season. The rookies might have to sing in front of all their teammates or sport an embarrassing haircut, like Tim Tebow did in 2010 while with the Denver Broncos.Martin is now in his second year. Also, it is thought that the coaches told Incognito to toughen Martin up.Martin’s teammates should’ve stopped this before it actually got to this to level.Martin is a young football player who was subjected to harsh, unfair treatment. The NFL Players Association is doing an investigation, as they are trying to get to the bottom of this. This investigation is supposed to take some time, as there is still a lot of information that is yet to come out.Hopefully, justice will get served in due time. — jayljohn@indiana.edu

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>During the NBA offseason, there were many storylines that generated interest leading up to last week’s season-openers.Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett went to the Brooklyn Nets in a trade with the Boston Celtics and joined a better team with more talent.I wonder if they remember when their former teammate, Ray Allen, did the same.Pierce and Garnett wanted an apology from Allen since he left to join the talent-laden Miami Heat.Last year, Garnett said he lost Allen’s number. Pierce said he hadn’t forgiven him, and former coach Doc Rivers implied Allen had an ego problem.Fast forward to this year, and now Garnett and Pierce have joined a starting line-up containing three other all-stars.The tables turned when LeBron James and Dwyane Wade stood up for Allen, implying Pierce and Garnett are hypocrites.James said he thinks Garnett and Pierce owe Allen an apology. The way Garnett and Pierce left the Celtics is slightly better than what Allen did.Garnett and Pierce were traded to the Nets, while Allen signed with the Heat. However, Garnett had to waive his no trade clause to become a member of the Nets. Many other interesting things happened during the offseason.Derrick Rose finally came back after taking a year off. He even said he believes he can jump five inches higher than in his rookie season.James said he was going to call Rose to tell him he is happy that he’s back. Now that’s true sportsmanship: great competitors wanting to compete with other great competitors. Also in the offseason, some other interesting transactions were made. The Houston Rockets signed center Dwight Howard, but didn’t trade away their other center, Omer Asik. But the biggest move of the offseason didn’t concern a player. It concerned a coach.Doc Rivers was traded from the Boston Celtics to the Los Angeles Clippers for a 2015 first-round draft pick.Trading a coach for a draft pick is a rare move.Acquiring Rivers will help the team overall, as the Clippers look to become the No. 1 seed out of the Western Conference.Of interest to Indiana high school basketball fans, former Lawrence North High School star Greg Oden signed with the Heat and dunked in a game for the first time in years.Fans will look to see if any players like Oden will be on the move. Chris Paul is a prime example.Just like every season, there will be speculation on what coaches will get fired, what players will get traded and what team will be the surprise team. This offseason had a lot of drama, indicating this NBA season will be one to pay attention to.I can’t wait to see how the drama unfolds.— jayljohn@indiana.edu Follow columnist Jaylen Johnson on Twitter @nelyaJohnsonIDS.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>It’s that time of year when the baseball season is dwindling down. After seven long months of baseball games almost every day, football and basketball are about to take over. There are two baseball teams still standing, fighting it out in the crowning jewel of baseball — the World Series. It’s a World Series few seem to care about. There’s something the World Series is lacking this year, much like in previous years.I’m not the only person who thinks so.Although last week’s Monday Night Football game featuring the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings was a matchup between two horrible teams, more people decided to watch that game than Wednesday’s World Series opener. In a dull, boring game Monday that was miserable to watch, the Giants defeated the Vikings 23-7. The football game had a 9.5 viewer rating compared to Game 1 of the World Series, which had a 9.4 rating. That truly shows something.Baseball isn’t America’s national pastime anymore. The World Series had fewer viewers than a football game between two teams that had one win combined.Last year’s World Series was the lowest rated and least watched World Series ever.Baseball has definitely lost its edge. The World Series used to be the biggest sporting event in the world. Not anymore. Many other events have become bigger than the World Series. There’s a plethora of reasons why people aren’t tuning in to watch the World Series.Baseball is a tough sport for some to watch.People don’t like watching baseball because they think it’s boring and there’s not enough action. The athletes are often standing in one spot for long periods of time.Football always provides entertainment. From hard hits to exciting plays, football seems to grab the average sports fan’s eye easier.Players are always active, alert and on their toes, expecting the next play. But that might not be the No. 1 reason why more people watched the football game. Maybe football is just that good of a sport.Football is a sport where every game counts. The baseball season, at times, seems too long. The 162 baseball games during the regular season followed by a one-game playoff and three best-of-seven series can get tiring.Teams can have extended losing streaks in the MLB and still make it to the playoffs. In the NFL one loss can cost a team the playoffs. It’s time to crown football as America’s new favorite pastime.Football seems to have taken over as the most talked about and watched sport.Fans in St. Louis and neighboring regions had an interesting choice to make Monday. The St. Louis Rams played host to the Seattle Seahawks while the St. Louis Cardinals played host to the Boston Red Sox.Don’t be surprised if the Monday Night Football game had more viewers than Game 5 of the World Series.I know what I watched.— jayljohn@indiana.eduFollow columnist Jaylen Johnson on Twitter @nelyaJohnsonIDS.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>The Grambling State football team has been in the news this past week, unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. The team had boycotted games, looking to make a stand against what is severe mistreatment. The boycott started a week ago and ended Monday night. The players on the team voiced their opinions about traveling, the conditions of the facilities and the coaching situation, among other issues. The players wrote a letter to the administration explaining their frustrations. In the letter, they said there are certain factors hindering the team from reaching their goals. It’s about time players stood up to schools and authority figures. It’s great they took a stand for what they believed was right.Team members said they didn’t agree with the school on how to travel to games.Grambling State, located in Louisiana, traveled to Kansas City and Indianapolis by bus. Those trips took 14 and 17 hours, respectively.Players’ resulting fatigue was apparent when the team lost to Alcorn State, 48-0.Whenever a team travels that far, it should fly. There’s no reason a team should have to ride a bus for over half a day and then be expected to play in a football game later. That’s just not fair. But that’s not the only injustice. The equipment and the condition of the practice facilities aren’t up to par.In the players’ letter, they said, “Mildew and mold can be seen on the ceiling, walls and floor and are contributing to water leaks because of faltering walls and ceilings.”The floor is coming up in the weight room.Athletes shouldn’t have to deal with this. A Division-I FCS school should provide better. The letter also says, “The uniforms are poorly cleaned and contribute to the multiple cases (of) staph infection.”Players also didn’t like that they had to pay for things such as Gatorade, a costly commodity that adds up for student-athletes and is provided to most athletes by their programs. The last of the problems addressed in the letter was the coaching situation. Doug Williams was fired early in the season. The team was not consulted. Interim coach George Ragsdale received no support from the team. The players supported three other coaches, Dirt Winston, Vyron Brown, and C.C Culpepper and wished one of them had been named interim coach.Winston was named head coach Thursday.Ragsdale’s dismissal was one of the conditions to end the boycott, since he allegedly contributed to five of the past seven losses. Most of the team didn’t show up to the bus Friday as the buses’ departure time was pushed back an hour. The game was later canceled.Jackson State was awarded the win by forfeit, since Grambling State never boarded the buses.Southwestern Athletic Conference commissioner Duer Sharp said late Friday night that, according to league rules, Grambling will forfeit and the school will be fined.Earlier in the week, Grambling players walked out of a meeting with school officials Tuesday and did not show up at practice Wednesday.Grambling State was bold this week and set a precedent for other schools to follow, if necessary.Rarely have players challenged their college and not practiced. The players took a stand and stopped Grambling State’s athletic department from running over them. The school needs to cancel the rest of the season to fix these huge problems.Grambling State has been in the news for the wrong reasons, but the players are more than right.— jayljohn@indiana.eduFollow columnist Jaylen Johnson on Twitter @nelyaJohnsonIDS.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>After months of waiting, Derrick Rose returned to the basketball court Oct. 5 against the Indiana Pacers. That’s a great sign for Chicago Bulls and NBA fans.Getting the start at point guard, Rose scored 13 points on five-of-12 shooting from the field in 20 minutes.“Same old Derrick Rose,” Pacers Coach Frank Vogel told the Associated Press. “He looked great.”Rose is going to have a season for the ages. After tearing his ACL against the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2012 NBA playoffs, the 2010-11 NBA MVP sat out the entire 2012-13 season and postseason. Now, he finally seems to be healthy and ready to lead Chicago into the playoffs. This season, he’s on a mission to win the NBA championship.Toward the end of last year’s NBA season, there was much speculation about Rose’s return. He would warm up earlier than the healthy players and sometimes would even warm up with the team. Seeing him on the court, fans expected him to return to the court in game action. There were videos of him dunking with a little explosion during practice last season. He seemed as if he could play, but he wouldn’t be at full strength.Fans got their hopes up. They wanted to see their hero — the best basketball player to put on a Bulls jersey since No. 23 himself — return to guide their team.He never did.He said he wouldn’t return until he was 110 percent. In a USA Today article published earlier this year, Rose said, “It can be within a couple of weeks. It could be next year. It could be any day. It could be any time.“It’s just that I’m not coming back until I’m ready.”Now he seems as if he is.So far through the preseason, Rose has played in two of the three games. The Chicago Tribune’s Bulls beat writer K.C. Johnson tweeted something interesting Rose said less than two weeks ago.Johnson’s tweet said, “DRose on his mindset: ‘If it’s my Mom on the court, she’s going to get killed.’”This comment was made with no disrespect to his mother. This was made as a fair warning to all NBA players. He is willing to challenge everyone in his way. Basketball is that serious to him.In a recent commercial for Adidas, Rose says, “If you took away the money; if you took away the fame, the spotlight; if you took away the lifestyle and all the things that come with it; if you took away all the flash, what would you have left? Everything.”Basketball is a way of life for Rose.Rose still appears to have the killer instinct and grit that compelled him to help the Bulls win games. His comment about his mother will be one of the many memorable things from Rose’s 2013-2014 NBA season.Rose is ready to get out there and be the competitor he is.Follow columnist Jaylen Johnson on Twitter @nelyaJohnsonIDS.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Fashion is a big part of college football. Teams want to set new trends and get all the attention.More teams need to look into getting new uniforms and helmets.Saturday was a big day for the unveiling of new uniforms and helmets.Every year, Notre Dame plays a so-called “home” game away from South Bend for its Shamrock Series, an annual game where the Irish wear a special uniform. Notre Dame played against Arizona State in its 2013 Shamrock Series uniforms. In the past, Notre Dame has traveled to the Alamodome in Texas, Yankee Stadium in New York, FedEx Field in Maryland, Soldier Field in Illinois and Cowboys Stadium in Texas for its Shamrock Series “home” game. This year the Irish wore all white uniforms with special gold helmets, breaking tradition and foregoing their normal gold pants. The jerseys had gold numbers with green outlining.Notre Dame’s opponent, Arizona State, broke out new “fire” helmets for the game with gold flames covering the dark helmet. The game aired on NBC with much of the college football fan base watching. The game finished third in the number of viewers during the prime-time slot Saturday night.Arizona State was aware of this and took advantage of the national audience to show off their new helmets.Northwestern wore black matte-finish helmets in their game against No. 4 Ohio State. Also, Tennessee wore “smokey” gray uniforms Saturday.New uniforms and helmets help these college football programs both financially and in terms of recruiting. Many colleges have already experimented with different uniforms and helmets. The University of Oregon is known for having a multitude of helmets, jerseys, pants and shoes, as the co-founder of Nike, Phil Knight, was a student athlete at Oregon.Oregon has more than 1,000 different combinations of uniforms in their possession. There is a website devoted to displaying what the Oregon Ducks wear every game. The website ducktracker.blogspot.com shows the helmet, jerseys, pants and socks. One of the major benefits of the new uniforms is revenue. If the jerseys look nice, then fans are going to buy them.Sometimes people will buy jerseys just to buy them or because the team did well in those jerseys, such as upsetting their rival. When a team unveils a new uniform, there is usually a lot of excitement about it. Fans and critics wonder how the jerseys are going to look in person and on TV.The new uniforms also appeal to high school prospects, making jerseys one of the newest recruiting tools.Notre Dame had as many as 65 prospects at their most recent game, according to Tom Lemming at the South Bend Tribune. As Maryland coach Randy Edsall has said, “Kids are into gear. They love designs.”If they wanted to, these schools could put spin on their tradition and update their looks, as opposed to completely altering it.If any college football program wanted to get attention and increase their popularity, getting new uniforms is the way to go.Some teams really need to improve their current looks, even if only for one game.College football uniforms are changing all the time, and the programs need to stay on top of it in order to make sure they stay competitive in the recruiting game. — jayljohn@indiana.eduFollow columnist Jaylen Johnson on Twitter @nelyaJohnsonIDS.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>The 2013 Major League Baseball regular season ended Sunday. There were many highs and lows during this six-month period. Some of baseball’s most well-known players and coaches retired. Todd Helton of the Colorado Rockies ended his 17-year career in baseball.Paul Konerko, another 17-year veteran, might have played in his last game as a White Sox and MLB player, ending an illustrious career that led to him winning a World Series and time spent as the captain of the White Sox.Now he’s a free agent, taking a month to decide if he wants to keep playing or retire. If he continues playing, the White Sox will have to decide if they want to resign him.Konerko said he would prefer to return to the White Sox, even to play in a reserve role.Baseball needs more players dedicated to playing for one team. It needs more Konerkos and Heltons. It’s rare now to see a player spend his entire career with one team like Konerko and Helton did. Now, players leave for the worst of reasons. Most players are concerned about which team is willing to give them the most money and perks. They aren’t concerned with building a relationship with the fans or organization. Sometimes they just want to be the star of an organization, instead of a complementing piece.Helton made his debut for the Rockies in 1997. Since then, he’s become one of baseball’s most feared first basemen, often putting up gaudy statistics. He’s been an All-Star five times, a Silver Slugger four times and has won the Gold Glove award at first base three times.Konerko was traded to the White Sox from the Cincinnati Reds in 1998. He became a major part of the 2005 White Sox team that won the World Series. Most baseball fans thought Konerko would end up signing a very lucrative contract from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim or the Baltimore Orioles.Instead of taking the money and running, he agreed to come back to the White Sox for less money. The contract he signed was for five years and $60 million. The Orioles offered him $5 million more for the five years.Players aren’t connecting with franchises like Helton and Konerko did.The Rockies paid tribute to Helton earlier in the week at Coors Field during his last series there.Helton received the lineup card from the home plate umpire as a souvenir. He received a standing ovation from the sellout crowd of 52,396 people at Dodger Stadium.Receiving a standing ovation at your rival’s stadium is powerful, and it showed Helton did a lot during his career.Helton got another standing ovation from the Dodgers crowd even though he struck out to end his career.Konerko was greeted with cheers when his name was announced in the starting lineup, and he received a standing ovation before his first at bat in the first inning.Conor Gillaspie replaced him with one out in the top of the second inning as he left to cheers. The Royals were standing in the opposite dugout, cheering for Konerko as he exited the field. Not too many players now will be receiving this type of treatment in years to come. Most will move on to different franchises because one franchise won’t be able to satisfy them.Players in every sport need to maintain loyalty with the franchises that gave them their starts and not leave for more money and perks elsewhere.Baseball needs more guys like Konerko and Helton.— jayljohn@indiana.eduFollow columnist Jaylen Johnson on Twitter @nelyaJohnsonIDS.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Rosters expanded all around Major League Baseball on Sept. 1.Teams could have as many as 40 players active for every game, as opposed to the 25 who are active during the regular reason — until September. The September call-ups are often overrated, with some of the most talked-about prospects finally coming up to the big leagues after months of speculation.Far too many players sit on the bench, with the chance of playing in the game later.Dugouts can get full of position players, and bullpens can get full of pitchers. If you were to check out a box score from this month, especially from a team with many good prospects or a team out of the race, you might notice all of the position players were taken out of the game and replaced with backups once the game was beyond salvageable. Some of the players are only up to be a pinch-runner or to be another arm in the already deep bullpen. It’s understood teams want their prospects to get playing time at the end of the year, but the game-day limit of active players should be 25 for each game, not up to 40.Though it allows teams a look at the up-and-coming players, calling up the prospects and playing them a lot can be viewed as tanking — giving up on the season. As many as 40 players should be able travel with the team, but once the game starts, only 25 should be active. Also, it’s understood that managers want to give their players time off, some because the playoffs are starting in less than a month and others to give the aging veterans a break.During the playoffs, the rosters are kept at 25.The month of September should be no different than the other six months that baseball is being played.Former Chicago Cubs second baseman Ernie Banks was all for playing two games in a day, and now some players are barely playing five innings and taking every other day off, with the manager knowing he has multiple backups on his roster.MLB should keep the rules the same and fair for the whole season. They need to change the September call-up rules.Baseball has backups for the backups, which is diminishing America’s pastime.— jayljohn@indiana.eduFollow columnist Jaylen Johnson on Twitter @nelyaJohnsonIDS.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Fantasy football is a problem. One of my friends from high school often checked fantasy football while the teacher was lecturing. The teacher took him outside the class to tell him to stop playing fantasy football and to pay attention. He didn’t stop checking his roster, and by the end of the year my friend had his computer privileges revoked.Sadly, this is the case for a lot of fantasy football players. It’s an addiction. They take it too seriously. Nationally, many people spend too much time gazing at a computer screen, updating their roster. For some it’s more than just a hobby. It’s a job.A lot of fantasy football players need to pump the brakes and step back from the game. There are other things out there, such as a real life — not just a fantasy life — that these people are missing. Fantasy football is a top priority for many people. These people might even be at their real jobs but are checking the latest headlines, interested in finding out the latest on their players and the news they are making. It could be about a fine, suspension or even an injury. There are diehard football fans and fantasy football players who flip between the channels interested in knowing if the players on their team will play in the game. They don’t rememeber that they’re not the ones playing in the game.Sometimes a person might be in a league with his or her friends or co-workers and live in the same area. One of the people in the fantasy football league might throw a fantasy football draft party. The preparation for a good fantasy football draft party takes a while. There are many other important things that a fantasy football player could be doing.A fantasy football player could go on a hike, meet the neighbors or, in the case of my friend, do his homework instead of wasting his life away in front of a computer. You might even play in a league full of strangers. And people wonder how Catfish got started. There are leagues that cost money to get into, with a prize going to the winner at the end. Instead of putting your money into a league, one could use the money to take a significant other on a dinner date or buy Grand Theft Auto V. Often fantasy football players think they are running heir own business, but actually they aren’t. They get to pick their own slogan, mascot/logo, and team, leaving many people with a misplaced feeling of power. What a joke. Some people think they have business skills when they really don’t.Fantasy football can dominate your life and leave you with tough decisions to make. Stop taking this little game so seriously and do something positive with your life. — jayljohn@indiana.eduFollow columnist Jaylen Johnson on Twitter @nelyaJohnsonIDS.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>Two Saturdays ago, Texas A&M played its first game of the college football season against Rice. Last year’s Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel was suspended to start the game. Both the NCAA and Texas A&M agreed that the punishment of only two quarters was acceptable after Manziel was suspended for signing memorabilia. The NCAA called it an “inadvertent violation” of organization rules. This goes against NCAA rule 12.5.2, which states that players aren’t allowed to autograph commercial items they know might be sold like T-shirts, balls, sweatshirts or posters. The NCAA couldn’t prove that Manziel actually got any money from his autographs, but various reports have stated that he autographed items for money. The NCAA spent five hours questioning Manziel to see if he received any money for signing memorabilia. Both the NCAA and Texas A&M agreed that Manziel should’ve been aware that when signing many autographs at one time, they likely will be sold. “Student-athletes are often asked for autographs from fans, but unfortunately, some individuals’ sole motivation in seeking an autograph is for resale,” NCAA Vice President of Academic and Membership Affairs Kevin Lennon said in a CBS Sports article. Players need to be suspended for the full game or just not be suspended at all. In-game suspensions are probably one of the worst things that sports have. They might as well call them temporary benchings, because the player will be in the game once the “suspension” is over. Manziel probably would’ve played just a little more than a half against Rice. His back-up most likely would’ve seen similar time on the field if Manziel had not been suspended and been allowed to start the game. Why wasn’t he suspended for the second half? What if the game was close at halftime and last year’s Heisman Trophy winner couldn’t play in the third and fourth quarters during crunch time? Then again, he could’ve been suspended for different quarters, for example the first and third quarters of the game. There are often huge changes of momentum when a suspended player comes in from the bench. The opposing team has to prepare for just about anything. As of now, the case of the autographed memorabilia is closed, but if more information comes up, he could be punished more. Maybe this time he could get suspended for a quarter or a select number of plays.Texas A&M does deserve credit for suspending players who committed unspecified violations of team’s rules right before kickoff. Four players, including three defensive starters, were suspended moments before the game kicked off. Some backups started the game and didn’t look all that prepared as they allowed Rice to easily move the ball down the field, scoring on their first two drives. The Aggies started the game without eight suspended players, even though two, including Manziel, could play once the second half started. At least Texas A&M realizes that when violating team rules, no matter how close to the start of the game, the situation needs to be dealt with. But their suspensions, along with the NCAA, need to be for games at a time. Not just a half. Not just a couple of quarters. That’s far from a meaningful punishment. It should be for a full game, at least. — jayljohn@indiana.eduFollow national sports columnist Jaylen Johnson on Twitter at @nelyaJohnsonIDS.

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>College football was in full swing again Saturday. Finally, the best sport was back after an eight-month break. On Thursday and Friday, there was a little tease of what was to come during the weekend.College football games started at noon, and the last game Saturday started at 10:30 p.m. There is one thing about college football that makes it so special. There are games on all the time. You could just watch your favorite team or just about every conference in a day. College football fans are in heaven on Saturdays. Games start at different times, and in the middle of the day there could be 10 or more games on at the same time. It’s possible for a fan to watch more than 12 hours of college football and spend part of two days watching the games because some of the late-night Saturday games run into Sunday morning. The level of play ranges from game to game and from conference to conference. In a day, a person will see many different offenses, defenses and distinct plays.Another reason college football is so great is there are so many teams and conferences. There are 125 schools competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Six conferences that contain 73 teams make up the Big Six conferences, which have automatic bids into the BCS.Therefore, there are 52 teams that are in other conferences or are independent. Some of those 52 teams are mid-majors that have the chance to upset well-known and ranked teams. There have been teams from conferences other than the Big Six, such as Boise State and TCU, that have been deemed BCS busters. Then there’s Michigan. They were upset by a team from the Football Championship Subdivision, which is a level lower than FBS. Usually the talent on a team from the FCS is considerably lower than on an FBS team.Michigan’s 2007 game against Appalachian State was memorable because Appalachian State blocked a last-second field goal attempt to upset the Wolverines, 34-32.Rivalries have helped to make college football the amazing sport it is today. Arguably, the biggest rivalry games are Michigan vs. Ohio State, Army vs. Navy and USC vs. Notre Dame. The Civil War game between Oregon and Oregon State has been played since 1894.There are so many other things that make college football special that you simply don’t see in the NFL and in other sports.Tailgating, the memorable team entrances, rowdy student sections and historic stadiums make college football great. One could easily lose a Saturday to college football. Nothing compares to this sport. If Saturday was a preview of what is to come for the rest of the college football season, this season will be one to remember.Follow columnist Jaylen Johnson on Twitter @nelyaJohnsonIDS.
