I have never entered a show more blindly than I did for the IU Department of Theatre, Drama and Contemporary Dance’s production of “Reefer Madness.” I hadn’t heard of the musical with a cult following until the 25th anniversary concert in Los Angeles this summer.

In 2012, I spent all 24 hours of a family road trip to Florida listening to One Direction’s “Take Me Home” album. I had my dad’s hand-me-down Nexus S phone that allowed me to take photos, play games and listen to music. The album is only 55 minutes long, but I was more than content with having it on a loop. “C’mon C’mon” and “Heart Attack” were my hyperfixation songs.

There was once a time where I truly believed that I was about to abandon pop music. I had turned into a middle-aged uncle with my listening habits. An average playlist of mine was made up of Neil Young, Steely Dan and Paul Simon. I didn’t like anything on the radio, and through Spotify I was able to detach myself from what was current. I found myself relating more to the 11-year-old girl who is a superfan of Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers (a story that is beyond heartwarming).

My first real introduction to “Saturday Night Live” was in 2014 as I began middle school. In a class titled “Leadership,” each student had to pick an influential figure’s name out of a hat and make a presentation on what made that person special. The name I picked was Gilda Radner. Radner, one of the original cast members of “Saturday Night Live,” became a role model for me quite quickly after. In a sea of Amelia Earharts and Susan B. Anthonys, I was excited by this new name and the challenge it would bring me. The more I learned from interrogating my family and watching every “Saturday Night Live” clip I could, the more I fell in love with Radner. In my presentation, I described her as “zany, charming and unapologetically herself”.

This summer, I dragged my mom to The Clairidge—a single screen movie theater in Montclair, New Jersey—for a matinee of Alexander Payne’s “Election.” The theater was featuring a series, titled “Clash of the Claridge Classics: 1939 vs 1999,” in which the audience could watch two films from the respective years and vote for their favorite.

When I was in elementary school, “Jersey Shore” was at its peak and it was ruining the state I called home. New Jersey was not so affectionately known as the “Armpit of America” and my dad would go out of his way to remind us that Pauly D is actually from Rhode Island. Like many New Jersey kids, I went on to hate “Jersey Shore” and its impact on my state's reputation.

Sometimes I wonder if the talent coordinator at “Saturday Night Live” can read my mind when choosing a weekly host. If you know me, you know that “Hacks” on Max is my favorite show at the moment. I have been beyond obsessed with Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder’s chemistry since the first season premiered in 2021. So, when it was announced that Jean Smart would host on Sept. 28 for the premiere of SNL’s 50th season on, I knew I was in good hands.

I remember the first time I listened to “Les Misérables.” I was in fifth grade and had been given the sheet music to “Castle on a Cloud” by my vocal coach. The song is sweet and one of great yearning, as it details a young Cosette’s longing to escape her servant-esque life. When I started singing, it was clear I truly had no idea how to act out the song. My vocal coach gave me the assignment to watch the musical’s 25th Anniversary Concert and thus my obsession began.

Autumn brings, in my opinion, style’s best. Darker colors, layering, sweaters —all traditions I revel in. As the air becomes crisp, and the fall foliage makes you feel like you’ve stepped directly onto the set of “Gilmore Girls,” let your wardrobe change with the seasons. This is what is in this fall (according to me).

Theatergoers listened when Blake Lively told fans to “Grab your friends, wear your florals, and head out to see it" as she promoted her newest film, “It Ends With Us.” Excited at the prospect of turning their brains off and watching a predictable, yet comforting movie, audiences were surprised to say the very least.

Any trailer starting with “You Get What You Give” by the New Radicals instantly grabs my attention. The anthem — known by many from “Surfs Up” or the cover from season three of “Glee” — is an instant serotonin boost. This perfectly captures the themes of FX’s newest show “English Teacher”.

Choosing the perfect college was no easy task for me.

There are few times when a Saturday Night Live hosting pairing will give me a visceral reaction, but when it was announced Nov. 29 that actor Adam Driver would be hosting with musical guest Olivia Rodrigo, I went into full body shock. It felt reminiscent of the moment when it was announced actor Timothée Chalamet would be hosting with musical guest boygenius (it was Halloween and while dressed as Joan of Arc, I forced my friends to take a picture of me with the iconic post it notes).

Anne Hathaway and I hail from the same town: Millburn, NJ. With its notoriously academically challenging and competitive school district, it trains its students to want the same thing — the best. It is so uniquely toxic our former middle school principal wrote a tell-all book about it. Hathaway and I followed similar paths, staring in our high school’s productions and doing everything arts related. While she graduated and ascended to stardom a la “The Princess Diaries,” I find myself here, penning this article.

The “it girl” can be defined as “a woman who is very famous, fashionable or successful at a particular time.” The term originated in 1927 with the film “It” featuring silent film actress Clara Bow. It quickly gained traction among the most stylish young women who exuded a certain "je ne sais quoi" drawing people in through their effortless appearance.

My Thanksgiving break can be summed up in one word: cinematic. I visited the movie theater on three separate occasions, catching “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” “Saltburn” and my melodramatic favorite, “May December.”

The 2010s feel like one big fever dream set to the tunes of Kesha, One Direction and the Glee Cast. My childhood was defined by flipping through copies of J-14 and Tiger Beat, my OG Deuxmoi, serving as style guides in a world before influencers. Now, the 2010s are making a comeback. The “Hunger Games” franchise is back. The 1975 is on tour. Robert Pattinson and Suki Waterhouse are in the news with pregnancy rumors. Pop culture has made its rounds, but it’s not alone.

Entering the theater to watch a Sofia Coppola film is a religious experience.
