When IU Diving Coach Jeff Huber announced his retirement after 24 seasons leading the program, vice president and director of athletics Fred Glass was assigned the task of finding an equally impressive replacement.
He has found that man. Monday afternoon, IU announced Drew Johansen will take over the Hoosiers' diving program starting in the 2013-14 season. Johansen, the United States' Head Diving Coach in the 2012 Olympic Games, has served as the coach at Duke since 2007 and was most recently named 2013 ACC Coach of the Year.
During his time in Durham, he coached Nick McCrory and Abby Johnston - both of whom are Olympic medalists.
"We believe we have hired the best diving coach in America with Drew Johansen," Glass said in a press release. "In the best tradition of Indiana University swimming and diving and specifically Doc Counsilman, Hobie Billingsley and Jeff Huber, Drew brings an innovative approach to teaching which will help Indiana build on our excellent history of NCAA and Olympic champions."
Under Johansen's direction, Duke's diving program saw unprecedented success. In his six seasons coaching the Blue Devils, divers clinched 15 individual ACC titles and four NCAA titles. As the U.S. Head Diving Coach in the Olympics, he led the team its best showing since 1988; a four-medal effort.
Johansen has also coached at the national level for more than seven years and served as the head coach of the 2011 U.S. World Championships team. He founded the U.S. Elite Diving Academy in 2001 and has been the owner of The American School for Diving since 2007, which produced a Junior World Championships gold medalist in 2012.
"I look forward to working with Drew to bring swimming and diving championships home to Indiana," IU Coach Ray Looze said in the release. "Drew is a proven winner and is the perfect fit for IU Diving today"
