IU senior Derek Drouin was a surprise entry in the heptathlon at the Big Ten Track and Field Championship Meet. When it came time for the heptathlon's high jump, Drouin was a heavy favorite to score big points.

Drouin did a little bit more than that.

After a successful jump at 2.24m (7-4.25), Drouin raised the bar to 2.27m (7-5.25) for an attempt at a new world record for high jump in a heptathlon. Drouin cleared that bar to set the record, but wasn't done yet.

Drouin moved the bar up to 2.30m (7-6.5) and cleared that as well. He called it an event and stepped out without making any more attempts.

Drouin entered the heptathlon high jump sitting in fifth place. By the end of the event, he had moved up to first with 3358 points. The high jump concluded day one's heptathlon activity and will conclude tomorrow with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1000m run.

Drouin adds a world record to a resume that already includes three national titles and an Olympic bronze medal. He will compete later in the men's high jump event and the conclusion of the heptathlon.
