Speaking to us after the Hoosiers' 21-4 loss to the No. 22 University of Louisville Cardinals Tuesday, IU Coach Tracy Smith said he has a message for his team:
"We're going to go with guys that want to compete," he said. "If guys are going to nibble, and pitch behind in the count, they're not going to get the baseball. If that's four guys or five guys, that are going to carry us, then so be it.
"Our approach, as we progress, will be win one game at a time. Seriously, if we've got to use four guys to win on Friday, we'll use four and we'll figure it out. I don't know that we're going to stack up and go man-for-man with everybody in the league. We've clearly shown that up to this point. Our goal - and we talked to the kids yesterday - is [for opponents to look at IU and say] 'They don't pitch it great, they don't play good defense. They're only hitting .260 on the year.'
"I want them to look up at the end of the weekend and say 'How did Indiana just beat us two out of three?' That's got to be our mindset and our mantra as we move forward.
"We'll find a way to scratch and claw and win games"
