Senior Allysa Vavra set the IU record in the 200 yard Individual Medley (1:56.80) today in a third-place finish, as the Hoosiers closed out it's first day of the Georgia Invitational in high-quality form.
The men's team (4-2) ended the day in third place in the overall competition, after strong finishes by multiple swimmers. Sophomore Cody Miller finished second overall in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:46.59, the highest finish by any Hoosier thus far during the meet. Other top five finishes included a third-place finish for junior Ryan Hinshaw in the 500-yard Freestyle and fourth-place finishes in both the 400-yard Medley Relay and 200-yard Freestyle Relay. The No. 14 Hoosiers, with 177 points, currently stand only behind No. 5 Auburn (279) and No. 9 Georgia (238) in the standings, and currently lead the defending national champions, No. 6 California, by four points.
Meanwhile, in addition to Vavra's record-breaking performance, the No. 14 women's team saw success in the pool, as they are currently in fourth place overall in the standings. Senior Margaux Farrell had a strong performance on the day, placing third in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing only behind two Georgia swimmers with a time of 4:38.79, and finishing eighth in the 50-yard freestyle, the top IU finisher in the race. The Hoosiers also placed fourth in the 400-yard Medley Relay and fifth in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay, closing out the day with a total of 170.5 points. They currently trail No. 18 Virginia by only 16.5 points and No. 2 California by 27, however are edging No. 6 Auburn by 14.5 points. No. 1 Georgia currently holds the lead by over a 100-point margin, with 335 points.
In addition, IU overall had 12 NCAA B-Cut Qualifying Times and four NCAA Provisional Marks, as more will be earned as the meet progresses.
Action resumes tomorrow morning at 9:30, as the meet continues throughout the weekend.
