IU football coach Kevin Wilson added three coaches to his staff Thursday, including one to replace Brent Pease, who returned to Boise State earlier this week.

Pease was replaced with Rod Smith, who spent the last three seasons coaching the quarterbacks under Rich Rodriguez at Michigan. Smith will serve as co-offensive coordinator with Kevin Johns and will also coach the quarterbacks.

Most recently, Smith has worked with explosive running quarterbacks Pat White (West Virginia) and Denard Robinson. That will undoubtedly start speculation about Ed Wright-Baker and incoming freshman Tre Roberson as the starting quarterback next season.

Wilson also picked up former Michigan offensive line coach Greg Frey to serve in the same position at IU. Frey played football for Bobby Bowden at Florida State and was a part of the 1993 national championship team.

The third addition is one that had been speculated upon for days -- Jerry Montgomery as the new defensive line coach. Montgomery most recently served as the defensive line coach at the University of Wyoming. Montgomery played defensive tackle for Iowa from 1998-01.

All in all, I think the staff is solid. I wonder, though, if Wilson can make it work with two offensive coordinators. He's also an offensive mind, so there may be somewhat of a power struggle on that side of the ball.

So, this is how the new coaching staff looks:

Defense

Doug Mallory - Assistant Head Coach/Co-Defensive Coordinator/Safeties

Mike Ekeler - Co-Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers

Mark Hagen - Defensive Ends/Special Teams Coordinator

Jerry Montgomery - Defensive Tackles

Corey Raymond - Cornerbacks

Offense

Kevin Johns - Co-Offensive Coordinator/Wide Receivers

Rod Smith - Co-Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks

Greg Frey - Offensive Line
