When Indiana traveled to Pennsylvania this past weekend for contests against conference rival Penn State and the Bison of Bucknell University, it was more than just another road trip.
Seven members of the IU Field Hockey team graduated high school in Pennsylvania. So playing in the Keystone State was somewhat of a homecoming for goalkeepers Alex Mann (Telford, PA) and Becky Pany (Allentown, PA), respectively. Freshman goalkeeper Maggie Olson is from Springfield. Among others from Pennsylvania: Junior forward Corey Brautigam hails from Landisville, PA. Sophomore forward Brooke Borneman graduated from Southern Lehigh High School in Coopersburg.
Pany recorded a career-high 11 saves in the 1-0 loss to Penn State.
Finally, sophomore forward Morgan Fleetwood graduated from Selinsgrove in Freeburg, PA, a little under 20 miles south of the Bucknell campus in Lewisburg, PA. Fleetwood assisted on senior forward Lena Grote's goal that tied the game versus Bucknell.
"I think so," said coach Amy Robertson, when asked if Morgan's assist carried any additional significance due to proximity. "Morgan would have liked to have a couple of more goals today. That would have really been special. She's capable of that. I think it's special that we came away with a win today."
Fleetwood and Borneman each converted two penalty strokes to give the Hoosiers a 7-6 edge and ultimately gave IU the victory. Pany recorded eight saves.
Talk about Hoosiers making contributions in their home state.
