Today was the first day of the third round of matches in the group stage.
In the final games of Group A action, South Africa took on France and Uruguay took on Mexico
An inspired South African squad came out to play against a French team rife with distractions and deep chasms within the team.
Bafana Bafana won the match 2-1, but that was not enough to advance due to Mexico having a greater goal differential. Bongani Khumalo and Katlego Mphela scored for the hosts in the first half, before Florent Malouda cut the deficit in half for the French in the second half.
In the other match, Uruguay defeated Mexico 1-0 thanks to a first half goal from Luis Suarez. With the win, Uruguay and Mexico both move on, but Uruguay finished top of the group with seven points.
In the final games of Group B, Argentina faced Greece and South Korea took on Nigeria.
Argentina, playing with a starting lineup that was majority backups, defeated Greece 2-0 with two late goals in the second half, first from Martin Demichelis and the second from the oldest member of the squad, the 36 year old Martin Palermo.
The Argentinians won each game they played in the group stage and consequently won the group.
Meanwhile, Nigeria and South Korea played to a 2-2 tie, which ensured advancement into the quarterfinals for the South Koreans, the first time they have made it that far since hosting the World Cup eight years ago.
Lee Jung-Soo and Park Chu-Young scored for the Koreans, while Kalu Uche and Yakubu scored for the western African nation.
