I thought I would add some information about the men's golf team being selected to the NCAA Central Regional along with some updates on the Hoosiers as they prepare for the tournament.
First off the NCAA Men's Golf Championship is broken down into 6 regionals, each of which will send 5 teams and the low individual on non-advancing teams to the NCAA Championships on June 1-6 near Chattanooga, Tenn.
IU is the considered the No. 10 seed out of the 14 teams chosen for the Central Regional played at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. from May 20-22.
The field is as followed with each team's Golfweek's rankings in parenthesis: Stanford (3), Florida (6), Florida St. (19), Duke (24), LSU (30), North Carolina St. (40), Iowa (48), Michigan (49), Northwestern (50), Indiana (66), Virginia Tech (61), Murray State (124), Detroit (143), St. Francis (PA) (261).
The defending National Champion Matt Hill of North Carolina St. is in the field.
A few personal thoughts on the NCAA Central Regional-- This is a pretty good draw for the Hoosiers as of the five players projected to be in the lineup, four of them have played the Warren Golf Course in different summer tournaments throughout their careers.
Also, with the four Big Ten teams in the field all are almost interchangeable in that any given week any of the teams could beat each other. I would have to think IU has the most experience on the Warren Golf Course and they also lost to Stanford 3-2 in the Collegiate Match Play earlier this year, so they can play with anyone on the field.
Lastly on Monday, four Hoosiers expected to be in the lineup at the Central Regional attempted to qualify for the United States Open. Sophomore Chase Wright advanced through the first stage with a two over par 73 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind. Freshman Brant Peaper and sophomore David Erdy (played in the 2009 U.S. Open) each are alternates after they shot 74. Freshman Corey Ziedonis missed the cut with a 79. Wright will advance to the final stage of qualifying in early June.
