Jiovanny "Jio" Fontan has been receiving phone calls from USC, Miami, Oklahoma State, Kansas State and IU, according to East Coast hoops expert Adam Zagoria.

Fontan, a 5-foot-11 sophomore point guard from perennial power St. Anthony (N.J.), received his release from Fordham on Monday.

The transfer was a top 150 recruit in 2008 and was averaging 15.0 points and 4.2 assists through five games this year with the Rams.

As a freshman, the "dynamic point guard" averaged 15.3 points, 4.7 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. He finished his freshman campaign ranking ninth in the Atlantic 10 Conference in scoring, fourth in assists and 12th in assist-to-turnover ratio, according to FordhamSports.com.

Fontan will be eligible next December, meaning he will sit out the rest of this season and also the first semester (or quarter) in 2010. Should he come to IU, he would take the Hoosiers' lone available scholarship. IU has only 12 men on scholarship this season and has an opening for 2010-11 as well.

The Fordham transfer told Zagoria he plans to make a choice by the end of the month and plans to take the necessary visits.
