The newly-ranked women's soccer completed another thrilling come-from-behind victory on Friday night, defeating Hofstra 3-2 in double overtime. IU is now out to a 6-0-0 start, the best start in school history.
Their undefeated season was on the brink, as they trailed 2-0 with only nine minutes left. The senior leadership really came into play. Senior defender Kelly Lawrence took a direct kick from midfield in the 81st minute that took a big bounce off the wet artificial turf in the box and into the upper right corner for the goal. For Lawrence, it was her first goal of the year.
With only two minutes remaining, the Hoosiers kept fighting. They forced four corner kicks, including the game-tying goal by Senior defender Christie Kotynski. The play started in the 88th minute on a Chloe McKay corner kick to Devon Beach, who sent the ball in the box where Kotynski was waiting to redirect into the back of the net to tie the score at two and push the game in overtime.
IU's momentum would carry into the second overtime, as the defense did not allow a Hofstra shot on goal in either overtime peroids. Sophomore goalkeeper Linsday Campbell returned to action after suffering a concussion in the upset victory over Florida last week to make a season high five saves in the game. Midway through the second overtime, Lawrence took a direct kick and passed it to Kotynski, who rifled a shot into the upper right corner for the game-winning goal. It was Kotynski's third goal of the year and second of the game as she propelled IU to a tough victory over a Hofstra team that has gone 39-10-4 at home since the start of 2003.
The Hoosiers will travel to St. John's for a Sunday afternoon game. The Storm are 4-1-0 in 2009.
