The third and fourth innings were dominated by the pitchers who didn't allow scores. However, it was the bottom of the fifth inning where IU faltered.

Arnett forced Louisville into a fly ball to first base where first baseman Jerrud Sabourin misread a ball and committed a costly error. The Cardinals would post two runs on the play, sending Dominguez and Wunderlich in for sliding scores.

The sixth inning saw Marks leave IU swinging as it provided the 300th strikeout of his career. Dickerson grounded out to lead off the top of the sixth inning. Marks then struck Gonzalez out looking before leaving Lambert swinging.

John Dao was thrown out after he hit to Arnett and Drew Haynes singled to get on base. Haynes then gave a faint attempt at second base but was immediately thrown out by Phegley for only the third of the year. Haynes was 17-of-20 before testing Phegley.

Richmond was later walked onto first on a two-out, payoff pitch walk. Duvalle ended the inning by stranding Richmond and swinging at a breaking pitch that was low and away.
