For a team looking to compete for a conference championship, this was not the start IU had hoped. The Hoosiers fell to the West Virginia Mountaineers 14-4 in the opening game of the Big Ten/Big East Challenge.

IU junior ace Matt Bashore was roughed up early, giving up eight hits and six runs in the first three innings. Freshman Wyatt Hoff replaced Bashore and pitched four good innings of three hit ball and two strikeouts. But by the time sophomore Kyle Leiendecker entered the game, the Hoosiers were trailing 8-2.

The IU hitting was not up to par, either. Outside of junior catcher Josh Phegley (who was 4-5 on the afternooon), no Hoosier had more than one hit in the game.

The Hoosiers look to rebound Saturday afternoon when they face Georgetown at 1 p.m. Stay with the "Inside Pitch" and idsnews.com for updated information on the IU baseball team's trip to Florida in the Big Ten/Big East Challenge.
