IU coach Tom Crean and the Hoosiers were competitive but not victorious in their Big Ten season opener.

A late second half comeback wasn't enough, as the Hawkeyes held off the Hoosiers, 65-60. Freshman guard Nick Williams led IU down the stretch with a gutsy performance, making several plays on both ends of the floor and finishing with a team-high 14 points (7-11 FG) and five rebounds. Freshman guard Devan Dumes had 12 and freshman forward Tom Pritchard added 11.

IU limited its turnover count, committing only 11. But the team could not contain Iowa forward Cyrus Tate. The big man dominated the Hoosiers in the paint, getting several of their players in foul trouble, and scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Combined with playing on the road, the Hoosiers young team played without two of their oldest players in the closing minutes. Senior forward Kyle Taber and Dumes both fouled out, forcing Crean to go deep into his bench, even playing walk-on freshman Broderick Lewis in the last minute of the game.

The Hoosiers shot 43.2 percent for the game and tied the Hawkeyes in rebounds with 27. IU now drops to 5-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
