Hey folks,
This is the first of a couple of posts about my trip to the seven-inning game one of the Cream and Crimson World Series out at Sembower today. Like an idiot, I left my notebook elsewhere, so I'll have to do this first one from memory and follow up with stats in a bit.
First, a few injury notes:
--Matt Carr is shut down for the fall with a right shoulder injury that he's apparently been pitching through all summer. He won't pitch until the spring.
--Freshman infielder Cody Webber, as reported by commenters in this space, also has an right shoulder injury, and I was told he has had prior issues with the same shoulder, which was in a sling today. Unsure at present whether he'll see action in the fall.
--Sterling Mack suffered a hard collision with Chris Hervey trying to play a ball hit to right-center during Monday's game. He stayed down for several minutes, but eventually got back to his feet and did not come out of the game.
"He took a knee to his face, and we were a little worried there, he got a little blood in there, but I think he's gonna be fine," IU coach Tracy Smith said after the game.
--Junior reliever (and usually closer) Chris Squires isn't playing right now for what Smith termed an "internal issue." Squires was at the game Monday, in street clothes in the stands.
As for the action, Matt Bashore and Eric Arnett started for the Cream and Crimson squads respectively, with both turning in shutout performances over their four innings of work. Alex Dickerson had a ground-rule double and a three-run home run to lead the Crimson in a 7-3 win.
I'll have a more detailed game wrap in a bit with stats and quotes from coach Smith -- just as soon as I can dig up my notes. Enjoy this for now.
