Over the weekend, Indiana women’s tennis hosted the Hoosier Classic at the IU Tennis Center against seven other schools: Ball State University, Iowa, the University of Louisville, Miami University, the University of Notre Dame, Kansas State, and the Hoosiers’ rival, Purdue.
The tournament began Friday with singles matches and continued on Saturday with doubles matches. The last day of the tournament ended on Sunday with singles and doubles finals.
Sophomore Hi’ilani Williams played the Hoosiers’ first singles match Friday against Ball State sophomore Gabriella Barrera. She volleyed her way through the match to win 6-0, 6-3. Williams’ second match that day was tough, but she powered through and won against Notre Dame junior Bianca Molnar 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Senior Elisabeth Dunac beat Miami sophomore Allie Faulkner 6-4, 6-4 in flight two singles for the Hoosiers. Dunac played Notre Dame sophomore Jessica Kovalcik later in the day. She had a rough start to the match but came out on top 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Senior Chase Boyer struggled throughout the tournament. Boyer lost her matches against Louisville senior Lika Peresypkina and Notre Dame freshman Skye Madatali 2-6, 0-6.
Sophomore Mansi Vadyala held it down on singles flight five, getting a win against Kansas State senior Margaret Jaraczewski 6–3, 6–4 and a victory over Iowa sophomore Clare Schaefer 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. However, by the third match on Sunday, Vadyala couldn’t come out with a win against Madatali 4-6, 7-5, 1-6.
The two seniors, Li Hsin Lin and Boyer, served up wins all day for the Hoosiers during their doubles matches. Their first match of the day was against Miami junior Avery Voss and freshman Zara Darken. Hsin Lin and Boyer won 6-4 and took that energy with them into their second match of the day against Notre Dame fifth-year Anastasia Sysoeva and freshman Aria Nina Abalos, winning 6-1.
Williams and Dunac started the classic strong with a 6-4 win over Faulkner and Miami junior Maria Luisa Oliveira. They put up a good fight during their second match but ultimately came up short of a win, 5-7, against Kansas State freshman Sabrina Balderrama and sophomore Varya Bernovich.
The Hoosiers will return to match play Oct. 8-13 for the ITA Regional Championships in Mason, Ohio. The women will have a week break and then come back for the ITA Sectional Championships in Knoxville, Tennessee, Nov. 5-8.
