COLUMN: 3 apps all IU students should have

During orientation, you’ll likely be told to download countless mobile apps to do things like keep track of your class schedule, connect with new friends and figure out where to eat on campus. While you most likely won’t end up using half of those apps, here is a list of three apps that will actually be helpful during your time at IU.

1. IU Mobile

IU Mobile is your one-stop shop for all campus necessities. Once you log into your IU account, this app tracks your class schedule, meal plan and maps out every campus building. If you are looking for something that doesn’t appear right away, the app can also take you to One.IU

IU Mobile also allows you to connect your Crimson Card directly to your phone, which makes scanning into dining locations and using your room key convenient. However, it’s important to remember that if you do connect your Crimson Card to your phone, your physical card will be deactivated.

Especially in my first weeks of a semester, this app is a lifesaver when it comes to checking the time and locations of all my classes. You may not need to check it as much after a few weeks, but it’s invaluable at the start.

2. ETA SPOT

Mastering the campus bus system is one of the most helpful things you can do early in your college experience.

Some classes can be as far as a 30-minute walk across campus, so taking the bus can prevent strenuous walking trips. ETA SPOT allows you to keep track of bus paths, making navigating campus easier.

You can choose your location and view the closest bus stops and routes. Make sure that you choose which routes you want to be visible on-screen, otherwise it can look a bit confusing.  All of last year, I was too scared to learn the bus system, but once my friend suggested this app to me, it saved so much headache.

3. Grubhub

If you’re ever craving something not covered in your meal plan, you may want to download Grubhub over other food delivery services such as DoorDash or Uber Eats. IU students get a Grubhub+ membership for free, which takes care of service fees on your order.

You can also connect your IU meal plan to the Grubhub app, which makes ordering food at certain campus dining locations that typically take meal exchanges extra convenient.

After a long day of exams or class in general, one of my favorite things to do was order two hot and sour soups from a local Chinese restaurant as my dinner and the Grubhub+ membership makes that easier.

Good luck with your first year of college, I hope that these apps help you better navigate IU’s campus.
