Tree Martin-Lucas is the projected winner of the Democratic nomination for Monroe County clerk in the primary election Tuesday. She’ll now face Republican Julie Hays in November’s general election.
Martin-Lucas held 47.68% of the vote as of Tuesday evening. The unofficial results did not include provisional ballots, which usually account for a small number of the total votes cast.
The county clerk handles official records of the county including voter registration, marriage licenses, small claims and child support. They also manage elections and assist the county court system.
Martin-Lucas has a background working for the county clerk office as an election supervisor and chief deputy clerk. She wrote in an email to the Indiana Daily Student that her priorities are to run the clerk’s office with integrity, professionalism and a commitment to public service.
Her candidate website said she hopes to help Monroe County residents she works with, stating “everyone deserves clear information, patience, privacy, and to be treated with dignity.” She also aims for elections to remain secure, transparent and fair.
Incumbent Nicole Browne will not be running for re-election as she’s hit the term limit of eight years within a 12-year period.
Martin-Lucas will run against Republican candidate Julie Hays in the Nov. 3 general election.
