Judith Sharp is projected to win Tuesday’s Democratic primary election for Monroe County assessor, clearing the way for her to retain the position.

Against Democratic challenger Bob Nyquist, Sharp had 66.15% of the vote as of Tuesday evening. The unofficial results did not include provisional ballots, which usually account for a small number of the total votes cast.

Sharp has been county assessor since 1991. In a statement to The Herald-Times ahead of the primary, Sharp said she is secretary of the county’s Property Tax Assessment Board of Appeals and is on the board of directors of the Association of Indiana Counties

“I am the only qualified candidate for this office,” Sharp wrote. “I hold all the credentials and certifications that a person must meet to hold this office.”

According to the Monroe County Assessor’s Office website, the office maintains property records for all county townships, which include property characteristics and assessed values. The office also holds sales information for property sales from 2008 onward. Another duty under Indiana Code is selecting and maintaining a countywide computer system.

No Republicans filed to run. Jenee’ Trimble, a former assessor’s office employee, intends to run as an independent.

The general election will take place Nov. 3.
