Indiana women’s tennis took control of the match early and cruised to a commanding 4-0 win against Cornell University on Saturday at the IU Tennis Center in Bloomington. The victory improved the Hoosiers’ record to 8-1 and matched their win total from last season.

Freshmen Hi’ilani Williams and Alessandra Teodosescu dominated in the doubles one match, winning 6-2. The duo’s dominance Saturday continued a stellar 8-1 record in doubles so far this year.

Juniors Elisabeth Dunac and Chase Boyer battled hard in their doubles three match, going toe to toe with Cornell’s pairing of sophomore Andrea Martinez De Los Rios and junior Victoria Zhao. Dunac and Boyer ultimately prevailed, winning 6-4 and clinching the point for the Hoosiers.

Heading into singles up 1-0, the Hoosiers never looked back. Williams continued to dominate, winning the singles four match in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, to get the team started. Alessandra Teodosescu won the singles two match in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, to push Cornell to the brink of defeat.

Facing defeat, Cornell needed to swing both games to give it hope of a comeback. Dunac and freshman Ameia Sorey put pressure on Cornell late in the game, but it was the latter who ultimately sealed the win for the Hoosiers.

Sorey and Cornell junior Michelle Ryndin battled in the singles one match, going back and forth in the first set. Sorey ultimately prevailed, winning 6-4.

Sorey controlled the second set throughout, jumping out to a big lead right away. She was up five sets to one when she hit a powerful forehand smash at the net to end the game, sending the crowd into a frenzy. The team clinched the fourth point, giving the Hoosiers a clean 4-0 sweep over Cornell.

With the win, the Hoosiers matched their total win from last season before even starting Big Ten play. With two more non-conference games on the schedule before the start of the conference slate, the Hoosiers have a chance to get double-digit wins for the first time since the 2022-23 season.

Indiana travels to Chicago next week to play the University of Illinois Chicago and Chicago State University on Feb. 27. The Hoosiers then return home to play in-state rival Purdue to open up the Big Ten slate. That match is set to start at 11 a.m. on March 7 at the IU Tennis Center in Bloomington.
