FedEx to close Bloomington ship center, raising concerns over local job opportunities

The FedEx Ship Center located at 3900 W. Roll Ave. is slated for closure on Feb. 28.

Public Investment Corporation, a Monroe County real estate agency founded in 1959, owns the property, which was valued at $7,226,400 in April 2025.

Customers were informed of the closure through email in early January.

“All team members at this station were notified several months before any changes occurred and were offered job placement assistance including opportunities at nearby FedEx facilities or relocation assistance,” FedEx Media Relations spokesperson David Westrick said in an email to the Indiana Daily Student.

Bloomington resident Chris Marksberry said he was unaware of the closure.

“I haven't really heard anyone talking about this specific location,” Marksberry said.

In 2022, FedEx announced efforts to integrate separately operating companies FedEx Express and FedEx Ground. The integration is part of Network 2.0, the company’s multiyear plan to increase efficiency in the pick-up, delivery and transport of packages. This involves closing 100 facilities by fiscal year 2027.

On June 1, FedEx’s fiscal year end will change from May 31 to Dec. 31, meaning fiscal year 2027 will begin in January 2027.

The company plans to see an incremental $1 billion reduction in structural costs from Network 2.0 initiatives in fiscal year 2026, according to its Form 10-Q filing at the end of quarter 1. The form gives a financial performance report to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for each of the first three quarters in a fiscal year.

A ship center in Terre Haute will close on the same date as the West Roll Avenue location.

Marksberry said the immediate impact will be on residents losing job opportunities, though he was unsure of the net impact from FedEx’s actions.

“The fewer jobs are available is it's really hard on students,” Marksberry said. “I know my son graduated a few years ago, and he's looking and he would take less desirable jobs to stay here, but with fewer jobs, it's more likely he'll leave.”

Westrick did not respond to an inquiry from the IDS asking how many employees would be impacted by the closure.

Tim Ponton, a Bloomington resident who visits the West Roll Avenue location several times a year, said the closure would affect him.

“I don't know that I'll go to the post office, because they're not very impressive on how they handle things,” Ponton said. “But the other option will be at College Mall will be a lot farther.”

There are four FedEx drop boxes available in Bloomington, and one print and ship center located at 318 S. College Mall Road.

FedEx also has shipping counters inside the Office Depot located at 100 N. Gates Drive and the Dollar General located at 5225 W. State Road. The Dollar General location offers only pick-up and drop-offs for packages. A full list of FedEx locations can be found on the company's website.
