To celebrate the 36th annual women’s and 73rd annual men’s Little 500 bike race, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater will show the 1979 film, “Breaking Away,” at 7 p.m. April 20.

“Breaking Away” is a coming-of-age film which follows four teenagers growing up in Bloomington, Indiana, often referred to as “CUTTERS.” Obsessed with Italian bicycle racers, Dave Stoller (Dennis Christopher) assumes an Italian persona and starts to work on his newfound love for bike racing. However, the four friends find themselves at odds with one of IU’s fraternities as they take their chances competing in the Little 500 bike race to beat the frat house.

The film won a Golden Globe Award for Best Film in 1979 and an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay the same year for IU alumnus Steve Tesich. Most of the movie was filmed on campus or in the surrounding Bloomington area.

Tickets for the event are $5 for students and $7 for adults and can be found on the theater’s website.
