Pipe break causes brief closures at Dunkirk Square

A broken pipe caused businesses across Dunkirk Square to close temporarily Monday night.

Firefighters responded to calls regarding the break around 4:20 p.m, according to Bloomington fire marshal, Tim Clapp. The pipe was fixed by 6 p.m, but businesses were not permitted to reopen until fire marshals verified the sprinkler systems were in proper working order.

Dunkirk Square, located at 430 E. Kirkwood Ave, holds several businesses about a block from Sample Gates.

The Upstairs Pub said in a post on Instagram that they would be closed for the remainder of Monday. Clapp said the rest of the business including Jimmy John’s, Insomnia Cookies, Yatagarasu and Rita’s Italian Ice, would reopen after approval from fire marshals.

The timeline for those businesses reopening was not immediately clear, but Clapp said the sprinkler system had been approved for use at 6:40 p.m.
