Tornado watch issued for Monroe County until 5 p.m. Wednesday

Flooding

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for 39 Indiana counties, including Monroe, until 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Severe thunderstorms are expected throughout the afternoon, according to the NWS. A wind advisory was also issued for Monroe County until 8 p.m. Wednesday. Southwest winds from 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 55 mph are expected.

In the event of a tornado, people should take shelter in their basement or a small windowless room, according to the Red Cross. Mobile homes and trailers are not considered safe structures during a tornado.

Wednesday’s weather comes less than a week after severe weather and tornados ravaged parts of Indiana. Governor Eric Holcomb has requested federal disaster relief for seven Indiana counties, including Monroe. Three people died in Sullivan County —about 45 miles from Bloomington— from tornados on Friday.
